Okay, gonna keep this simple, why do DPS use knockback spells?
As far as I can see there are only 4 reasons;
1. To create space between a caster mob who has aggro'd to a healer or ranged DPS
2. To interrupt an enemy spell cast
3. To increase personal DPS
4. Lower everyone else's DPS
5. To irritate the hell out of tanks
1. and 2. are fine, but they are the minority of cases.
3. Brilliant, except that it leads to ...4.
4. you knock mobs out of melee range, out of tanks range, and out of the AoE casts of other ranged DPS, an big loss of group DPS.
5. Tanks now have to work to re-group all the mobs which he/she carefully took the time to pull close - I personally think this is just as bad as "standing in the fire" - you are causing extra strain on an already tough job.
Is it really just simply the lack of understanding of 4.?
Sorry if this sounds rant-ish

Not at all. It annoys me greatly when mobs that I'm trying to pestilence or add debuffs to are removed from the range at which I can do these things. As a tank who relies on AoE to hold aggro, it's annoying when people knock mobs out of it so I don't generate threat.

To be honest, I don't run into many people that use knockbacks, but I do know what you are talking about.
Most of the time I assume it to be 1 and 2, as most people I group with generally know how to use it. However, sometimes it might come because of simple ignorance of the consequences of a knockback.

Haven't had many, if any, at 80, but I annoyed the hell out of me when Fire Mages Blast Waved mobs out of melee while I was leveling my Warrior.
Edit: If my Druid Typhoons and everything doesn't die, I cringe a little inside.

Currently got a warrior tank in the low 70's just levelling by instance, and I find whenever I get a boomkin in the group this happens a lot. I'm approximating about 50% of the time the Boomkin will do that knockback (Typhoon?). To make matters worse, about 50% of those times it's near the start of the fight when I am still trying to lay down initial threat.
It annoys the living crap out of me, but I try to see it as another challenge in life and try to work through it (even if it mean letting that boomkin die) /wink wink
I think I recall a boomkin doing it to a mob that went for the healer once... pretty smart on his/her part :-)

If DPS are using knockback abilities to increase their personal DPS, they should be glyphed to remove the knockback effect, or shouldn't be used. There are enough other ways to interrupt a caster. But, realistically, it's not a party-wiping event, generally speaking.
I'm entirely more concerned about DKs who pop Army of the Dead on bosses with channeled breath attacks.

I know Death Grip isn't a true taunt, but does it add to the taunt diminishing returns?

Uhm why wouldn't DG be a true taunt?

This was ninja-fixed and not mentioned in
any
patch notes. I first noticed that it
does
increase your threat in 3.3.3, but I have a feeling it was changed a few patches before that. It just was
never
in the patch notes. If you have Omen have a friend smack something for a while (like the boss guy in Honor Hold / Thrallmar, they take a while to die from even a lvl 80) and then use Deathgrip on it, your threat will increase the same as if you had used Dark Command. And after the 3 second debuff of the force-taunt wears off the mob will stay on you, as long as your friend stops hitting the mob and you start hitting it.
Uhm why wouldn't DG be a true taunt?
Because for about a year or so of WotLK it did not increase the caster's threat on the target. A taunt not only forces the target to attack you, but it sets your threat to equal to whoever has the highest threat on the mob. For the longest time Deathgrip did
not
do this. Many people still do not know that it now does, since the change to the mechanics was never announced.
I'm not sure if it adds the taunt DRs, but it might.
On-topic: I always get the Boomkin who just
has
to use Typhoon every time it's off cd... PITA when positioning mobs.

Ah I don't like DK's so never played them much and only started playing them later on just for the sake of knowing each class. So I missed the DG thing pretty much.
So yes, DG is a true taunt meaning DRs.

I think it's fun when they do it.
/Agree - Gotta have a little variation in life else it will all go stale :-)
