Wasn't suggesting that you did - just figured it was the most obvious example of common-use profanity, similar to 'fa-ggot' (split to avoid censor).
My original view was that to be critical of '#$%got' as insulting banter but not be critical of 'retard' in general use would be hypocritical, because it's espousing PC'ness about homosexuality without being PC about the mentally ill. But in hindsight, I think you're talking about people's attitudes of general homophobia, rather than specific terms, can you confirm? I think I was just feeding of Funden's 'that's gay' banter.

I was being so sarcastic in my "that's so gay" post that it was dripping off the post and blinding me.

A bit of both. I find far too many people on the internet to be homophobic, and that could be addressed first, but I would like to make sure the other one is talked about to. I try not to say 'That's gay" or whatever anymore, but I will admit, sometimes it just slips out.

The etymology of the words is actually interesting. If something's lame (i.e. boring, unexciting) it's probably from a racing background - a lame horse (i.e. disabled, unable to run) makes for a boring race. Gay, on the other hand, must surely have come from the popular belief of homophobia that homosexuality is something to be shied away from.

I know. I sit there and think "That's so happy, what? Or that's so homosexual. Hmm... I was unaware situations had sexuality. Interesting."
Sometimes I swear I hate my fellow teenagers. There are the awesome ones. Then there are the ones that I seem to have in all my classes that copy my answers and skip class and...
Gah, I'll just end there. /rant

One thing that has always served me well: I take
Murphy's Law
and adapt it to human behavior.
I.E. : Expect people (even more-so when dealing with younger people) to say the stupidest/cruelest/most ill-timed thing possible. If it can be said, someone will say it. Expect nothing but idiocy, immaturity and stupidity. When it comes to other players, set your expectations and standards of behavior, skill and courtesy as low as you can, and that way you can't be disappointed and upset, when you run into nothing except cowards and fools.
This is magnified when dealing with forced anonymity such as over the internet (WoW), where people can voice themselves without fear of recognition or retribution.

I do this when driving. Expect people to do the stupidest thing possible, because they will.

I don't think you're a teenager if you've somehow managed to never skip class. Or you're insane. Or a nerd.
Lol calling someone a nerd on a WoW forum.
Yeah, nevermind.

I'm going to start by saying that reading this thread has reminded me of a lot of the reason I dislike the internet. Pretentious people and their inability to see a point other than their own.
First, never take anything someone says on the internet seriously. If you can be so offended by someone in another state / country that has no clue who you are or your circumstances, you're a self-centered prick. If they're targeting you specifically with the knowledge that you're black, Hispanic, a woman, or whatever, then report and ignore.
Jokes are meant to be jokes. They aren't meant to offend the people they reference generally, only to appeal to a certain stereotype that only exists because some party of the race, sex, what have you exhibited the stereotype. Much of the 'racism' especially today is brought on by the races themselves. Just look at the news, look at popular culture, and don't make any stupid excuses about !@#$ that happened 200 years ago, you'll see 9/10 robberies, murders, and other generally stupid #$%^ involve black people. Not my fault. The media controls a lot of what is seen, this causes an incredibly biased perspective on things as well, but just look at popular rap and r&b videos and lyrical content. I'm sorry that Taylor Swift doesn't sing about #$%^&es, hoes, and cocaine. Being a dumb teenager who thinks a they're in love with a guy they've been dating for 2 weeks in middle school is a lot more tolerable than drug abuse and criminal activities.
I can only assume that black people are called "black" because originally their skin tone was generally much darker. Should everyone start calling certain people "brown" or "caramel" now because over the generations, they've become lighter skinned while others remain black? African American is a great term for people that are from Africa. Most of the people in America now have had their families here and only here for generations. Same with Asians and Hispanics.
People are just spoiled and self-centered nowadays and need to stop getting so offended over everything. Maybe then people will stop having a reason to be mean to each other if they learn that it doesn't accomplish their goal of pissing someone off.

Funny being incredibly subjective. Good taste hasn't mattered for a long time now, even more so on the internet. Did no-ones' parents teach them that getting mad over words is just what people want? Stop feeding the trolls and they'll stop trolling.

N word jokes, dead baby jokes, Islam=Terrorist jokes and others just like them are not funny, especially if they are being used to cause hate and rage to come out about from them. An example: What do you do when you see your TV moving in the middle of the night? Shoot the black guy. Joke like that might startle a laugh out of you, but it's not really funny.
And yes, funny is subjective; but can you honestly say that the stupid *insert racial stereotype here* jokes make you laugh? And anyone who takes a troll seriously is only about two steps from being a troll themselves.

Just for clarity's sake, could you define "funny", as you're using it?
I was under the impression that if something makes you laugh- regardless of the context or content- that it is at least in some ways funny.

It's the outrageous comment there, the one where you laugh at first...then you realized just what you laughed at, and realize 'oh !@#$'....as you look around at those standing near you. And it is still subjective; there are those people who laugh at the idea of torture and the like, long as it's not happening to them......

So, it's the outrageous claim itself rather than the content of the claim that makes one laugh in this situation. That I would absolutely agree with. But, then I ask, wasn't that the point of the joke in the first place?
Those people that laugh at those jokes don't do so to be malicious, but because they find the outrageous statement ridiculous. The comedian in question more than likely made the joke under the impression that it wouldn't be laughed at for the "truth" in the content of, but the absurdity of the claim.
I'll state my opinion on the topic here, as I don't believe I have anywhere else in the thread:
Jokes are jokes- nothing more, nothing less. It doesn't matter what the content is, so long as the punchline comes in at the end and most if not all people who hear it get a chuckle out of it. Everything is fodder for comedic satire. Sure, someone might get his feelings hurt, but boo-#$%^in'-hoo. Everyone else around you is enjoying themselves. Why? Because they don't take jokes as personal affronts to themselves- in fact, it's just the opposite. They realize the absurdity and ridiculousness of the joke, where for some reason you're unable to. To me, it says much more about those that become offended than those who don't.
Please note, I don't mean you as in, you directly, but you in the second-person POV sense.

Eh, I just don't see some jokes as funny; and then you have the jokes that massively cross the line as well.
