When a new player is thinking of coming to WoW they will probably be interested in how many levels there are.. once they find out its 85 I doubt they will buy the game. 85 levels seems too much of a grind, even for people who play WoW. Even if they make leveling faster, the number alone is still daunting.
Do you think Blizzard will do some type of down-grade for alot of content, like to rework everything so it is scaled down in terms of levels? Moving vanilla raids down to level 40, BC raids to 50, WotLK raids to 60, and cataclysm to 65? To compensate this, zones, exp, items will all undergo a downgrade to fit the level, do you think this will ever happen? After cataclysm it will be 90 levels and I don't think anyone will buy the game, so Blizzard has to think about this some time.

no no no and no. About the new player thing, I really could care less if 85 levels is intimidating, if they think its too much then it wasnt meant to be, theres other MMOs out there with alot more than 85 levels and they get new people all the time.

Yep. If getting to 85 is too much of a hassle, then getting raid-ready will be too much of a hassle, then actually raiding will be too much of a hassle, etc. It's a negative feedback loop.

You "could care less" because you are oblivious as to how things work. Yeah.. please name an MMO that get tons of people all the time with a level cap of 85+...

Hence "free", WoW is p2p if you haven't noticed, where getting subscribers is more of a challenge.

Also, any MMO with a lower level cap than WoW will probably take at least as much time to hit the cap.

They will never drop the level for the raids from the caps of the expansion; because that would make those who have their games frozen at certain places; such as Vanilla, BC, and Wrath come Cata, will quit in rage. It's not daunting at all.... seeing as there are other MMO's that cap at level 100 from the start, and there are video game RPG's out there that cap at 255.... so yeah, you want easy, go play something else.

Sounds like you just want to complain about something. EQ's cap is 85, and they're still putting out expansions, that means they still have a steady fan-base. EQ2's cap is 90, and again still putting out expansions.

Who cares if its f2p or p2p? People still drop tons of cash on those games in cash shops
Edit: Pwntiff is right also and its waaaaay freaking harder to level in EQ (not so much EQ2) than WoW and people still come back or sign up for those games on a daily basis.
and on another EQ related note: r.i.p my EQ paladin I got a email from sony telling me they are giving me a free month again but I dont have the heart to go back to a game they destroyed that I loved playing for 6yrs.

Despite the level cap in WoW rising, the amount of time it takes to go through a level is
significantly
less than any other game I've ever played (and getting shorter as we speak). Most MMO's are grindfests. This information is readily available to anyone researching the game - which is just about anyone that's actually paying attention to what the level cap is and taking that into consideration when wondering whether or not to jump in.

It's not the level cap number that might be daunting... its the time required to reach the cap, which can't really be quantified.
For a new player, the level cap is just an arbitrary number that has no meaning other than "You'll go through 85 of em, enjoy!".
If the game also said "It will take you exactly 4 in-game hours to gain 1 level", then I can see some casual new players blinking a few times and then going back to Frontierville or something.
If a player thinks they'll enjoy the game, the fact that you have a lot of content, enough to stretch out for "85 entire levels of fun!" would actually be a selling point...
You're simply thinking of the game from your point of view that "Oh, it takes forever... and I hate leveling characters through content I've already done X times! I WANT ENDGAME CONTENT!".

There isn't any uniform levels-to-time conversion that holds true across all MMOs. Potential subscribers with basic critical thinking skills should realize that.
Plus, on a pure time scale, WoW is (in)famous for being a lot less of a time suck in terms of whatever equivalent of 'leveling' all the MMOs have than most. Anyone who's done a little research before they buy the game (which they probably ought to, considering what the combined cost of everything up to Cata is going to be) is going to be aware of that.

QQ moar about daunting, you level MUCH faster in cata.
And new players are going to have this frame of reference from where? Hmmm.
Anyway, I think yes, it's going to be daunting and no, it's not perfect. But I don't care. If no new people sign up, then that means more loot for me. We have 13 million people apparently. Assuming half of those don't play regularly, which I think they do, that still leaves me with 6.5 million people to play with. Sure, there's the US/EU divide but whichever has more I'm happy with the amount of players on my server. Sometimes it's too many! Get off my loot!
