How much does latency affect your game?

I'm a student and I've recently moved over to Sky internet. All cool until a mate is on his wireless laptop too, and the ^&*! hits the fan, I go from <100 to >400. Now, picture next year; 6 students, all on wireless, three of us on CoD. I can't see it being playable.
But, that aside, I refer you to the question. Is this 500 ms or so of lag going to prevent me from playing to my utmost? I'm DPS so no biggie there, no mega serious role usually haha! (You get what I mean...)

Basically the rumor is that the for like every 200-300 MS latency you drop a considerable amount of DPS.
So at 500 MS you will see a drop rest assured. Especially if your very adept at using every single possible global cooldown to maximize DPS.
Some classes lose more others not as much depending on how button pressing intensive they are.

I've played successfully from Australia where the ms is usually around 200-600
tanking, healing and dps

I never said it will cause you to play unsuccessfully but there is a loss of DPS/HPS period the game takes a bit longer to register a button press. It is nowhere near the advantage in like a FPS of having under 100ms while someone else has 500ms.

I'm just saying. You can raid current content with 600ms

As long as it's under 1000 ms, you'll be fine.
What sucks for me is that I used to have under 100 ms, because I live in Texas and my server was based in the Dallas datacenter. Well, during their 24-hour downtime they move to Chicago, so now my latency is in the 200 ms range. :/

Meh, I used to play on a 56k connection, and, other than the horrible lag spikes, I managed just fine in groups or solo.
As long as you're below say 1000ms, you're still less than a second behind at all times. And if you're a DPS as you've said, nothing is that critical (other than maybe GETTING OUT OF THE DAMN FIRE!) that 1 second is going to kill ya.

Excuse me if I come across as rude, but that's total bullcrap and you sound like you don't really understand the underlying mechanics at play.
Latency affects 2 things: instant cast abilities, and the first cast of any ability after movement. Casters like arcane mages can, in a standstill environment, have 1000 latency and
not lose a single point of DPS
if they're using a castbar addon like Quartz to precast their spells at their latency limit. Toons that are not GCD dependent but rather energy dependent like rogues and feral druids can lose hardly any to no DPS at all because as long as the energy bar doesn't hit 100, there's zero DPS loss.
Casters that are GCD-dependent and use many instant casts are heavily affected by latency, as instant cast spells can't be precast according to latency. Theoretically worst-case scenario, if you were a class that used all instant cast spells on a 1-second GCD and had 100 latency, you'd lose 10% DPS. If you had 500 latency, you'd lose 50% DPS.
If you are forced to move due to mechanics, then the next cast-time spell you start after you stop moving will be affected by the latency because you will not be able to precast it. Any spells after that, assuming you stand still, you can precast.
So it all depends on your class and spec.
While that makes sense in theory, my friend's an arcane mage and he wasn't doing very good DPS for his gear (he had 500 latency) so I offered him my laptop to play (only about 30-50) and his DPS skyrocketed. Quartz was installed on both computers, and I tried both computers with the same results. So while what you said makes sense, in practice, 500 latency will always decrease your DPS by some portion.

Quartz isn't very good because it calculates the latency at the start of the press which can have changed by the end. Just spamming the button doesn't work too well but it's what I'm doing :)

I found this on the theorycrafting forum recently:They have added in a small "spell queue" where if your cast is at about 3/4 of the way done... and you hit another spell, it will automatically start casting that next spell as soon as it can...I'm not sure if this is true or not, I mean I've never heard of it before and I would think it would be in the patch notes. Maybe it was stealthed in.Thats pretty well known. Ive been doing it since i started WoW (March).
I'm almost positive that the "spell queue" is actually just the latency taking affect. Because the server registers your spell casting slightly after you hit the key when you're lagging, the spell actually finishes casting before your computer says it is.
If you don't understand, download Quartz. The higher the latency, the earlier you can start casting the next spell relative to what the casting bar says.

Sigh, People Complaining about latency that some countries only wish they could play at.
with that being said. i live in Australia. average latency here is 300-600ms, 300 being extremely good,
we can get around the 150-240 range, but only if we pay additional fees for tunnels and proxy servers.
at 300-600 still able to do damage comparable to americans PvE wise, just get a good latency meausurement Addon, such as Quartz or something. in PvP though 300ms difference can be the difference between an interupted heal and killing someone, or missing it, and getting killed. but hey, we can't all get servers in/or near our home countries can we.
so just toughen up, and learn to adapt.

I play on Uther, and live in the NW States (pretty much). I get on average 60ms. I can't stand playing at 200-300 now. I'm accustomed to no lag. Tried other servers with a higher pop (Proudmoore) and threw in the towel when 250 was the norm.
Shop around for servers with lower lag than others, if your ISP is stable, and your comp isn't running gobs and gobs of programs in the background (torrent).

You're just seeing complaining because you want to QQ. Nobody has complained. I asked what the impact would be on my game, and people gave me some answers. Nobody has complained.
Reading comprehension is like.... totally cool.
