I actually killed those elementals for a rep quest last week.
I have been trying to sell the Essences but they havent sold. I ended up vendoring last night.
It all depends on your sever economy.
Here is the secret: Find out what people are buying, farm lots of it and sell it cheaper than everyone else.

Thing is though, too many of the cool items cost WAY more than the average player carries.
We have a name for those. They are gold sinks. They are purely intended to be something people with too much money want in order to take that excess gold out of the economy.

Well, it's only a gold-sink if you buy the item from a vendor (things like the dalaran rings, tundra mammoth etc). ICC craftables and boe's, for example, are pretty pricey at the AH but can't be classed as gold-sinks because they don't remove gold from the economy.

Note: buy all the cheap stuff Cambo just sold, make items that sell for more than the price of items you bough.
Gratz, you just made gold on Cambo's back just staying front of the AH using your proffession or other's!

Just some guidelines I use (some of these are probably fairly obvious, I'm just listing them anyway in the hopes that it may be useful to someone still). Apologies for the wall of text ;)
Before you buy anything in the AH, check if you can't get the mats for less and craft it yourself (or have a friend craft it for you). On some occasions I have actually made money buying mats on the AH. Buying a full stack of something for a low price per item, using only the 1 item I actually need, and relisting the rest of the stack for more than I bought it for, but still less than the competition (keep an eye on the listing fee and auction house cut though).
Don't sell all the dusts, essences and shards you get from heroics, keep some in your bank to use for getting new gear enchanted.
If you like running old dungeons like Stratholme (for mount farming, rep grinding or just nostalgia), make sure to group with an enchanter with a high enough skill. The enchanter doesn't have to be in the instance with you, but you will still get the 'disenchant' loot option. Prices of the shards, essences and dusts can vary heavily though, so if you're going to do this for money get a feeling for your server's market. The main benefit of auctioning enchanting mats is that they are always in demand and since they can't be vendored, you don't pay any fee to list them in AH. So feel free to keep listing them endlessly until they sell for what you think is a good price. Prices often rise slightly around the weekends (when more people are playing, increasing the demand). Sometimes you may see prices spiking, probably due to people powerleveling enchanting.
If you have stuff to sell, check in which form it sells for the best profit. For example, on my server Bolts of Frostweave will sell for more than the 5 pieces of cloth needed to craft them.
Only repair your armour or buy reagents at vendors you're exalted with. For a clothie such as myself this is only a small difference, but the higher your repair bill (tanks on a progression night anyone?), the bigger the difference will be.
Be patient. Try to save up mats for enchanting new gear beforehand, so you don't have to get them once your shiny new weapon drops.
If you need a lot of items to turn in for a reputation grind, buy them over the course of weeks or even months, always only buying the few really cheap ones. This isn't practical for factions you need rep with in preparation for raiding of course, but if you're going for an achievement or that shiny '999/1000' bar this is the way to go. I spent a good part of a year collecting the mats I needed to get from exalted with The Scryers to exalted with The Aldor by just checking the AH regularly.
If your enchanting mats didn't sell today, list them again. If your prices aren't unreasonable they will sell eventually. Avoid endlessly relisting items that sell to vendors for a few gold; the listing fees can add up to the point where you won't make a profit anymore even if you sell the item.
Keep an eye on what any item gets you at a vendor. Don't bother listing it in the AH if you only stand to make a marginal profit. The Auction House will take a 5% cut of the sell price, and if the item doesn't sell you will have lost your listing fee.
However, you can count on other people listing items for prices below what a vendor would pay for them. It seems like some people will just always undercut their competition, regardless of this. There is nothing wrong with buying a stack of gems for 15g in the AH and immediately vendoring it for 20g.
Gems: You can use 10.000 (10k) honor points to buy raw (uncut) epic gems. It's surprising how many people do not know this. Even if you still have to pay a fee to the jewelcrafter cutting them for you, this is far cheaper than buying a cut gem in the AH. Again, keeping some cut gems in your bank comes in handy for when that lovely piece of gear drops (because a jewelcrafter able to do that cut for you never seems to be around at those times ;).
If you need more honor points, do the Wintergrasp weekly quests (or any other battleground). Or use your Stone Keeper's Shards (which you also get for killing dungeon bosses while your faction controls WG) to buy more honor (30 shards = 2k honor).

Its funny that in Azeroth gold is the only resource that decreases in Value over time.
It also increases in some periods of time.
