PTR Client Patch 4.0 Up For Download

Taken from WoW.com:
Cataclysm may be closer than we'd imagined -- or at least according to the PTR realm. The latest PTR client is labeled 4.0.0.12824, and is a whopping 16GB of information. While the PTR servers are not live, you can still download the latest version of the PTR client by visiting the official website.
Is this the Cataclysm patch, or the pre-Cataclysm patch? That's also unknown at this time -- until the servers go live, there's no clue as to whether this is all of the information for the Cataclysm changes, or pre-Cataclysm event information. Considering the fact that we got a glimpse into a small quest line in the Patch 3.3.5 PTR that was quickly removed, I've got my hopes up that we'll see a reintroduction of the storyline, as well as more regarding Deathwing's sudden and violent entrance into Azeroth.
Souce!

Doesn't mean anything; the PTR could be up for months after all.

Yeah, but it's still nice to get the hype train moving. :P

what about the new races?...i would love to play as worgens and goblins
This is for the pre-release patch, not the expansion itself. You'll be able to play things like troll druid or tauren paladin but not the new races.

Apparently you're not even able to play new race/class combinations.
At the moment this is purely to test new talents, skills, and glyphs and... some other stuff.

* Classes changes are up, new talent builds, new glyphs (not fully implemented yet), etc ...
* Revamped old zones are NOT available
* New graphics (textures, water effects) are NOT available
* Archaeology is NOT available
* Guild leveling is NOT available
* Flying in Azeroth is NOT available
* New content is NOT available
That's a list from MMO-C which basically summarizes what the dev's have said. Doesn't answer the specific question of new race/class combinations, but it does cover most else people will ask.
It's been said in interviews last month that Cata is slated for release this year (
as seen here
), which if they stay on track will mean that this patch should be released in the next couple months and I assume Cataclysm will be a few weeks to a month later.
What surprises me is that they're expecting this year, but they still haven't given a release date. I know Blizzard is very shy about giving release dates for patches, but I'd have thought they'd give a little more time than what they are for an actual expansion that requires an additional purchase. Maybe we'll see one soon.

The PTR is now live.
World of Warcraft PTR Patch 4.0.1
The latest patch notes can always be found at
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/
The latest test realm patch notes can always be found at
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/test-realm-patchnotes.html
General
Copied Test Realm characters are not copied with their achievement history in order to better facilitate the character copy process.
Classes: General
Many class talents, spells, and abilities have been overhauled, added, or removed.
All spell and ability tooltips will now display damage averages rather than minimum and maximum damage potential. This feature is on by default but can be changed via the Display settings under User Interface options.
Ammo has been removed from the game.
The character levels at which classes gain new spells and abilities have changed.
Many item and class stats have been changed or removed.
Rage has been normalized.
Spells and abilities no longer have multiple ranks and now scale with character level.
Talent trees have been altered. All player talent specializations have been reset, allowing for free re-specialization.
Each specialization has been reduced to a 31-point talent tree.
Players will now get a total of 41 talent points to spend.
Players will be asked to choose a specialization at level 10. Doing so will result in the unlocking of a spell or ability unique to that specialization, as well as one or more passive bonuses.
Once a talent specialization has been chosen, players may only place points in the primary tree until at least 31 points have been spent there.
The initial announcement regarding these talent tree changes can be found on our Cataclysm forum:
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25626290449&sid=1
Death Knights
A dedicated tanking tree (Blood) has been implemented.
The effects of Blood Presence and Frost Presence have been exchanged.
The way in which runes recharge has changed.
Druids
A new Eclipse mechanic has been added for druids.
Hunters
Five pets can now be stored with the hunter at all times. Any one of these five pets can be summoned via the Call Pet ability.
Focus has replaced mana as a new resource.
Hunters now start with a pet at level 1.
The Stable will now store 20 pets. If a pet is moved into the Stable, its talents are wiped.
Mages
There is now a new spell fly-out UI feature for mage portals. Clicking on the Teleport or Portal buttons will expand the list of choices available.
Paladins
Paladins now have a new resource bar.
Warlocks
There is now a new spell fly-out UI feature for warlock pets. Clicking on this single button will open up the list of available pets to summon.
Soul Shards have been removed from the game as items. Instead, they now exist as a resource system necessary for using, or altering the mechanics of certain spells.
Items
Resilience no longer reduces the chance a player will be critically hit by an opponent.
Durability: cloth, leather, and mail now have as many points of durability as plate, making the repair cost on death much closer to equal for all classes.
Professions
The glyph system has been updated to now feature three different types of glyphs. Many class glyphs have been added, altered, or moved to different glyph types.
User Interface
Spell Alerts have been added to notify players when procs on select spells and abilities occur. A visual notification will display around the character and the activated ability will be highlighted on the action bar.
The Arena Teams pane has been improved.
The Character pane has been redesigned. Character stats can now be shown or hidden via the Show All Details/Hide All Details button on the bottom left. When shown, all character stats will be visible in a window to the right of the pane. Stat sections can be reorganized by clicking and dragging them up or down the pane.
The Professions panes now have more filtering and search functionality, as well as buttons to easily link recipes in the chat frame.
A Professions screen has been added to the Spellbook to better display the details of a character's primary and secondary professions.
Many of the yellow System Messages that would display in the chat frame when leveling up have been removed.
New text animations now alert players as they level up, also providing information on when new talents, spells and abilities are available.
Professions and Class Trainers windows have been altered to more clearly display available and upcoming purchases.
New Raid frames are now. They can also be used in place of the standard 5-player party interface via the User Interface options.
The Spellbook interface has been improved for greater ease-of-use and visual appeal.

erm, not to look a gifted horse in the mouth but.......... the main "charm" so to speak of cataclysm, is the new quests, new class/race combos, new secondary skill flying and what-not..............
a PTR that solely involves the class changes (revamped trees, rearanged lvl to learn specific spells, removal of spell-ranks, normalization of rage, revamp of rune-recharges ect) but none of the PVE changes seems little apealing to me =/
I won't test it, (lore is the reason I play the game, ptr with no lore = waste of time) but I guess I'll download it.
who knows, maybe I'll get lucky (small chance of that) and the revamped old zones and questchains and new race/class combos will show on the PTR BEFORE they are implemented on live........
small hope, but hey, dreaming is free rite?
at least I'm glad to see that the rock is moving. First zalazane's fall and operation gnomeregan get added, now the PTR for the 4.0 patch is up, while it's still months away, the mere fact that cataclysm is nearer than before is a small consolation (dang it I R-E-A-L-L-Y wanted to be on that frikking beta :S)
Edit: huh :P it's been a while since the captcha text was prophetic (it's been gibberish lately) but for this post the captcha was (I mean it) "Stuff Starting" xD fitting indeed.

The main charm of cataclysm is the new quests, which is why they will be released with Cataclysm, and not 4.0. 4.0 is the precursor to cataclysm.

4.0 is the percursor to cataclysm, and yet the revamped old content, new combos, and new secondary skill will all be released prior to the actual cataclysm itself.
plus if they want 2 diferent batches of players testing the new skills (the beta testers, and the average joes who never made it to beta) I don't see the harm in them adding at least the 1-60 content and new race/class content to the PTR. is true that the new races, flying, new zones, and new dungeons are stuff reserved for those in the beta, and for people who actually buy the new expantion, but at least testing the lower content would be a nice consolation prize for those poor saps (like moi) who weren't recruited to beta.
as I said on my above post, the chances of them adding the lower lvl new content and new race/class combos is quite low, but hey dreaming is free.......
also, I like your sig :D
Edit: Meh, now that I think about it, I'm gonna go and test it anyways, simply because Battle for Undercity will be removed in cata, so I wanna doit at least a few times more to properly say good-bye to what is currently the best quest-chain ever (of course that positon is likely to change in CATA; but as of WOTLK the whole angratar chain is toped by none)

Blizzard has NEVER put up an expansion on the PTR. Not for burning crusade, and not for lich king either. All they've put up on the PTR has been the pre-launch patch which brings new talent and mechanics changes, not the expansions themselves (which would be a dumb thing to do, as it would let tons of people play the expansion before it actually launched.)
They've said they're going to include the new race/class combos (as in troll druids and dwarf warlocks for instance, NOT goblin and worgen) and the revamped version of Azeroth (new 1-60 quests and all that, not the new zones nor Azeroth flying) in the pre-release patch. All I said was that this isn't included on PTR.

I've been doing some limited play on the PTR. I created a couple of lowbie toons while waiting for my 80 main to copy over. My download isn't complete yet so I cannot speak as to whether the new race/class combos will be available (although I am told they will be) but things like the new lvl 1 hunter pets certainly are. The revamped UI is there and there are a couple of changes to the old quests that I have noted in the starting areas that am I familiar with, as well as what abilities that you are able to train, and when. There's more, but the starting areas are pandemonium and I'm not going to log back in until my main has copied over and things have settled down a bit.

I've experienced a weird bug, I'm wondering if anyone else has....
I open the launcher, the game starts downloading, and yet I can't just leave it there downloading, because the launcher gives an "unexpected error" and shuts itself down, so I have to re-open the launcher again to allow the game to continue downloading :S
I've began the download this morning, and just barely 1GB has been downloaded =/

but I'm not talking about putting the expantion on the PTR; I'm talking about putting in the PTR the stuff that will be released prior to the expantion such as the new race/class combos (exept the new races) and the revamped old zones.
none of that will be part of cataclysm, it will added to the game regardless of expantion purchase, so I'd love it if at some point they are added to the PTR. Yes I know they aren't avaliable on it now, but hey, I'm still hoping they get added later on.
