Well, even though they're sort of plain and all it's still just another stat you'll be stacking (or avoiding) so as long as they're good for the class I don't really mind...
Stuff like +pet damage for the pet specs and +absorption for disc priests just seems perfect IMO. Assa is the rogues' poison spec so they get poison damage, etc. I don't mind stats being straightforward like that rather than "chance for your poisons to do something".

As Philosoraptor said, mastery don't define a spec it is just a needed bonus to it. What will define a spec as fun or boring will be the talents in it, you could have a boring mastery but very interesting and fun talents in the tree. Or, you could have a fun mastery but bland and boring talents. I would personally chose the former over the latter.

Mastery means you just got really good at doing what your spec is supposed to do. You mastered it.
Why would you learn to do something completely unrelated from mastery?

Noam, you want to turn shadow orbs into a spell? So the gear on you that has mastery would be a spell? No, mastery should be a stat that works passively with your spells (by passive bonus or passive proc), and not a spell. You don't have "Critical Strike Chance - A shadow spell that will deal 50% more damage than a normal Mind Blast." It buffs the spells, it doesn't give you new ones.
To those who say we do need more interesting ones, I guess the point people are trying to make is that they don't want interesting masteries for the sake of interesting masteries. It's like Blizzard did with resto druids and new spells - resto druids didn't get a new spell, but they're making all of our other spells more useful. Would we be better off by having 12 hots, 5 direct heals, 3 AoE heals, and 4 unique heals? No, that would just get confusing.
A lot of masteries are actually nothing new to the class, but are actually something that was converted from a spell/talent to mastery. Elemental Shamans had a talent moved to mastery (Elemental Overload). Feral Tanks had a spell moved to mastery (Savage Defense). Balance Druids had a talent moved to mastery (Eclipse) but then had the mechanics changed. So a lot of the "fun" masteries really aren't new to the class, it's simply that an old talent now scales with a stat.
So those specs that get +% fire damage really aren't getting any less than the elemental shaman. In the end, will it really matter if you have a passive proc on your spells vs. a passive damage buff on your spells? Both increase your damage, both benefit from stats and benefit multiplicatively with other stats, and both do nothing to change your rotation. So yes, it might be cool to get elemental overload procs, but I don't think you'll pay that much attention to it while you're raiding.
Personally, I don't like the Restoration Druid mastery, and not because it doesn't seem "fun" but rather because it seems ill-conceived. Blanket HoTs will be significantly weaker in Cataclysm, so for the most part I won't expect to have HoTs on everyone when someone suddenly takes a big hit. When someone is low, I'm not going to pop Rejuvenation on you, I'm going to use Regrowth or Healing Touch. Unless the direct portion of RG is affected, too, I can see mastery as being a lot less useful for a druid.

So wait, isn't that what the masteries are for? To increase dps and get all the "busy" talents out so we can have more fun talents, or more meaningful talents that do something besides "increasing dps or heals done" or whatever?

i think the mastery is a good idea, if you are having low dps, then blizz will send uot a patch that will lower mastery need for that class, it will make everything more equal, and i will stop being called a nub for being a BM hunter
