Cool.
I'm 3 months into wow, and I'm just learning to play a mage too (lvl 44)
Definitely just level with whatever spec that you like. You can always respec at later levels, and your first respec is pretty cheap too at 1g.
Fire is fun to level, though if something gets close, you're usually in trouble from them stopping your from casting.
Arcane uses more mana, but has comparable damage to fire. As an added advantage, Arcane Missiles can't be interrupted if you take Imp. Arc Missiles, which is a huge advantage when soloing. None of the frost nova, backing up and casting.
Haven't had much experience with frost, though from my experience, they seem to be much better at kiting. Fire/Arcane can't kite for nuts. :D
Some things I've learned while playing my mage:
- You will have to stop and drink a lot. But don't get discouraged. It's made up by the fact that you take down mobs so much faster than any other classes.
- Take Frost/Ice Armor when you're solo-ing instead of Mage Armor. The increase mana regen is not worth the no. of times you'll be hit. Only use mage armor if you're farming low level mobs, or in a competent PuG.
- While you can take out Mobs several levels higher than you, be prepared to burn all your mana and most of your health doing so. Sometimes, it's not worth the effort.
- Hotkey FrostNova, Blink and Mana Shield. These can save your life.
- Use Mana Shield sparingly. Spamming them will leave you with lots of health and no mana, but using them correctly at a critical juncture can save you from a corpse run.
- Keep Dampen Magic up when solo-ing, even when there are no casters are around. Some mobs deal melee magic damage, and Dampen Magic helps with poison too.
That's all I can think of now. I'll post more if I think of anything else :)

Well for pve I would recomend fire Dps. my mage is spec for pvp (lots of stun and slowing effects) becouse I hate to respec, but if all your friends are 70 respecing should be cheap sense you dont do it alot & your friends will probly give you some cash if you need it.

Frost is the most mana-efficient (has the best damage per mana ratio) and allows you to take on multiple mobs at once, when played correctly.
Fire does more damage over a shorter period of time but is less mana-efficient.
