4.0.3
is
Cata... You just need to have the expansion installed and a Cata account to be able to roll a worgen/goblin, level 80+, run the new instances, visit the new zones, skill up your professions beyond 450 and for archeology etc. This is very old news and there were patches like this for WotLK and TBC as well.
Is it worth it? Well, depends on if you want to be stuck with WotLK content (and the new 1-58 stuff) forever.

You get a new leveling experience (1-58) with the remake of all the old Azeroth zones, that's what they meant. (will make it more fun to level one of the new class/race combos released in the same patch, for sure ;-) )

If you look, the zone changes are all going to be done in 4.0.3 and probably a lot of other things, leaving Archaeology, Level cap at 85, and Instances for Cataclysm. There's not much left.
Is it really worth it?
(/sarcasm)
I dunno, it's really fun to be stuck at 80? unable to actually do any progression at all? nor quests? nor pvp in the new seasons?
(/sarcasm)
dude, OF COURSE IS WORTH IT. how many people do you see who refused to buy WOTLK because "it's not worth it" simply because inscription, and the class changes were all implemented in patch 3.0.2 before WOTLK's launch? NONE.

I don't think anyone (including and perhaps especially Blizzard) is going to deny that a huge amount of content will basically be given away for free.
However if you don't buy the expansion you will not have access to new battlegrounds, competitive arena, new dungeons, raids, new zones, and the new races.
If you opt not to buy the expansion, I'm sure you'll be able to keep yourself busy for a good few months as you experience all the new old-world content, but eventually you'll want to pick up the expansion or stop playing.

WotLK gave access to one new class, an increase of 11.11%. Cataclysm gives access to two new races, an increase of 20%. Just like WotLK and TBC, Cataclysm gives access to more levels, new zones past the old level cap, as well as new dungeons, raids, battlegrounds and arena seasons.
Sure, you get a lot for free, but that doesn't mean the expansion isn't worth buying. Unless you like being stuck at level 80 while everyone else hurries off to 85.

4.0.3 will bring the redone zones and new class/race combos. That's it. Everything else is in Cataclysm itself.

Don't forget access to five more levels, and all that includes (new spells, new gear, etc.).

Yes....no really it is; 4.0.3 is technically the bare bones of Cataclysm itself: You can't fly in Azeroth without Cata, your not going to be able to play a green shortie or a wulfman, you can't dig in the ground for new and exciting finds, your never going to see the new and beautiful and disgusting zones that are being released, you can't set foot into the new and interesting dungeons all across the world, your never going to get into the new raids....and you know all those Justice Points? Yeah, useless without Cata: All the 'real' gear will be for level 85's.

Forget for a minute what you are getting with 4.03.. Lets focus on what you get with the box
1. Leveling past the current cap
2. New abilities and increased profession levels
3. Two new races
4. A new profession
5. New battlegrounds
Now, think about Burning Crusade. Does anything seem similar to you?
The fact that Blizzard is giving us a lot of 'free' stuff before the expansion does not diminish the fact that they are giving us 'in the box' exactly what they gave us in BC. Higher levels, 2 new races, a new profession and a bunch of other little things

erm, adamsm, u CAN get archaeology without cataclysm, just as you can get incription without WOTLK or Jewelcrafting without TBC.
you only need the expantions to reach the profession cap, wich is 450 in WOTLK; and 525 on cata.
as for the OP; as I said above, asking "is it worth it" is really a stupid question (no offence buddy but it really is)
we get a lot of free stuff with patch 4.0.3 but the real juicy stuff comes exclusively with the expantion. If u're a pvp fan, u can't participate in the new arena season, nor in rated BGs if u're not 85, u can't fly on the old world if u don't have the expantion, if u're a PVE fan, u can't do heroics or raids without the expantion. Cant make the new races without the expac.
the list goes on and on. 4.0.3 gives us barely 30% of CATA, the box gives the bigger70%

I'm pretty sure you'll need to wait til Cata is released to train it

We still aren't sure if it will be available to people who do not buy the box.
Someone else said this.. but is it true (I can't tell since I have both the expansions). If you do not have BC or Wotlk, can you still train JC and Inscription? I thought they required the expansions. If the didn't, then archeology won't either.

First Paragraph for Jewelcrafting
and I remember that; no JC trainers outside of BC areas so people who didn't have the expansion were SoL,
Inscription
was introduced in the Pre-patch for Wrath....so still have conflicting information heh.
As for Archeology
all it says is: Archaeology is a secondary profession that will be released in the upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Doesn't say pre-patch or not.

Here's a question kinda related to this topic.
After cata is released.
Assume you've never played WoW before and you went out and bought the core game and no expansions, will it be cata content for 1-60? Of course it will. So here's my thought/question. Will Blizzard continue to produce the core version of WoW or will they just sell the xpacs only? It seems odd to me for them to sell the core game when THAT version of the game doesn't exist anymore. And kinda funny too, buying one game but in reality playing another.
Right now, the core game has pictures of level 1-60 WoW, but upon cata release it can't have those pictures. It'll have to have cata pictures. So in essence, a new player will buy cata twice. Once to unlock the 1-60 stuff, then BC, then LK and then Cata again.
This is not a qq, just seems so strange from this side of the mirror.

I think what with that is this. Cata is still within origanal wows system as far as 1-60 goes. Yes the landscape has changed, and its also why blizzard does these huge patches to intergrade all the information for cataclysm to overlap the alpha. What the expansion gives us are the two new races, and all content like the dungeons and that past lv80. I think someone buying the first game will be able to play 1-60, but nothing else after. There not be able to lv to 85 without the other expansions anyway.
