I wowhead, long-time fan, but new to Rogues. Please provide me with the benefit of your collective experience and knowledge.
Now, there are certain abilities, such as Ambush, which provides additional damage if you use daggers instead of other weapons. So when something other than a dagger drops, I often wonder, "hmm.. is the additional dps worth it?"
What I'm doing right now is to try and evaluate it mathematically. Here's an example:
Dagger: 8-17 damage
Sword: 10-25 damage
Ambush damage: 90% weapon damage + 17, 132% + 21 if using daggers
So the damage from using daggers will be:
(((8+17)/2) * 1.32) + 21
= ((25/2) * 1.32) + 21
= 37.5
, while with the sword it will be ((35/2) * 0.9) + 17 = 32.75
Therefore, all things (e.g., stat bonuses) being equal, the Dagger will be better than the Sword.
Questions:
a) is my methodology correct? Knowing WoW, there could be a dozen hidden variables there that I'm not aware of, and
b) for a Sub Rogue (who I think
should
, as a matter of taste, be hidden and stab things from the dark as much as possible), should s/he always choose the weapon with the highest dps as per outlined in the method above, and finally
c) between a weapon with higher dps and one that provides +AGI bonus, how do you decide which to take?

A sub rogue should always pick a dagger as they need a dagger to use backstab
This is actually a very important point. Irrelevant of your burst, you aren't going to oneshot enemies at higher levels. When you're out of stealth and find yourself relying on hemo, you're likely going to struggle. BS is really important to help your relatively low damage.
