Hi Malgayne et. al.,
There was a recent thread that was shut down on the Off Topic forum relating to gold selling services. This thread was shut down by Gnub on the basis that it was against the rules of the forum - fair enough.
A bit of research suggests that there is nothing in the
Off Topic Rules
that speak of things being banned by Blizzard's TOU policy being banned in the forums, unlike the
Wowhead Forums Read Me First
thread.
The same goes with the class forums and every other board. There are no formal rules outlined on those boards, nor are there any links to the forum rules in the WoW General forum. As a result, any users who do not use the WoW General forum (or look at the Wowhead FAQ and follow the link to the rules) will never actually see the forum rules.
Just highlighting this as a point that might be worth addressing - either at the point in time when threads are locked down (i.e. including a link to the rules, rather than just a general 'read the rules' message) and/or by including a link to the forum rules in every forum, not just the WoW General forum.
Cheers,
Squishalot

The first rule in the
Off Topic Rules
has a link to the
Wowhead Forums Read Me First
thread. The 4th rule in the
Wowhead Forums Read Me First
thread is...Any links to, or discussion of RMT sites, powerlevelling services, private servers, or any other activity that is against Blizzard's Terms of Use or License Agreement will be deleted immediately, and the poster will be banned.
Those rules are very easy to find. If you haven't looked at them then that means you didn't want to try to. Even if they were posted at the head of every forum there will be many people that would still never look at them. Even if it was a pop-up that you had to scroll through and "Accept" every time you typed in
wowhead.com
there will still be tons of people that would never read one bit of it.
It's just like people who ignore the search bar and the database and jump straight to the forums. You can't help people who won't help themselves. You can try, but there's no guarantees.

Hm, I can't believe I missed that. /facepalm

Or that you never visited WoW General / Off-Topic.
I know that the rule is contained in the Wowhead Read Me First thread. My point is that it's not listed on the other forums. All I'm saying is that saying 'go read the rules' doesn't help when people don't know where the rules are. I know that when I started using Wowhead, I only used the class forums and ignored WoW General. I would imagine that there are plenty of others who would do the same.

Again, would you believe that the first time I visited that page was when all the boards got little icons, and I wanted to see the big versions? :P
Most people don't visit the root menu pages when there's a mouse-over list to select from.

Each board should have the forum rules within their helpful threads list imho. He makes a good point. He's not saying that the rules don't exist or that he didn't make a mistake, he's just pointing out that the forum rules are actually very easy to miss. I've read them but I frequent WoW General pretty often, there was a time when I too only really used the class forums (although I didn't really have any troubles since I just assumed Wowhead used the same basic rules as every other forum on the internet and would also follow the basic Blizz ToU/Eula rules)
