What's with the tanks in level 60 epics?

I've noticed while running BC and lower level Northrend dungeons that most of the tanks I've gotten have had a few pieces (and in many cases a whole set) of the old level 60 PvP epics, like the Grand Marshal's Aegis.
What I don't understand is why people would use these. At first I thought it was because they were returning players, but upon further research I'm assuming it's because they can buy them fairly cheap with honor. But why? They're PvP epics so they don't work too well in dungeons, and every tank I've seen with any of these pieces has to be spam-healed because they go to half health in like 1-2 hits.
It's very annoying when I have to blow all my cooldowns every few trash packs because the tank is too squishy.

The level 60 epic gear is perfect for tanking. It's a lot better than most greens/blues of that level, and has a ton of Stamina on it. They work just fine in dungeons because they were designed pre-resilience, so it's actually PvE gear.

Except that's crafted. Not everyone is gonna bother getting with gold what they can get with honor, which can be ridiculously easy to get at that level depending on your battlegroup
Plain retardness to compare PvP Equipment against Gear that is made for tanking.
If u want to tank, use tank gear. Simple

Yet, as has already been said, the PvP gear at level 60 is PvE gear.
Compare, say,
Grand Marshal's Aegis
to the nearest BC tank shields. (Which Are
King's Bulwark
,
Adamantine Kite Shield, Ancient Draenei Crest
, and
Shield of the Void
.)
Grand Master's Aegis vs Adamantine Kite Shield.
Grand Master's Aegis wins, the armor gain and proc beat out 6 agi and 1 stamina.
Grand Master's Aegis vs King's Bulwark.
Closer, and could come down to play-style, but still proc > 0.4% dodge, 2 stamina and 38 armor.
Grand Master's Aegis vs Ancient Draenei Crest.
Grand Master's Aegis clearly wins this. 2 stamina and 102 armor are minimal, but the proc gives it a huge advantage.
Grand Master's Aegis vs Shield of the Void.
Closest so far. Honestly couldn't tell the difference without min-maxing.
So, it's a good thing to invest in the shield. You'll keep it at least until you get into Netherstorm / Shadowmoon Valley / Northend if you're one of those people who can level to 68 in Nagrand.

If you're talking about Northrend, then I agree with you, but really, for Outland, it's a very good tanking set.
Remember that, as koa999 said, this was
before resilience
, which made PvP gear really quite good for PvE, and not like in Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King, where it absolutely sucked in PvE.

The level 60 honor shield is relatively good compared to TBC stuff. Higher end TBC shields are rare because people leave Outland at level 68. And then the honor shield gets replaced by a low end WotLK item.

Anyway, I ended up doing the next 4 heroics with random tanks and plate DPS still wearing their lvl 60 gear. I was wearing the lvl 70 Northrend crafted cloth, and I had more hitpoints then tanks by a long shot.
Hit points dont matter any more.

They still do at level 70. While this is certainly true for 85 content, HP is still very important for level 70 and particularly WOTLK content if you're at 80.
