Last night I was healing in BWD with a priest and also a druid and we got to about 10% and wiped. After the fight the priest sent me a message stating that I had over healed by roughly 2 million and that I was wasting mana and should hold back slightly.
Now for the way I heal and if some of you disagree please explain why. I had beacon of light on the MT that was getting swallowed by Magmaw but was assigned dps healing of the raid. Before the fight I like to cast holy shock on myself to build up holy power and sustain it until the actual fight begins whether it is 2 minutes or 20 minutes depending on how much talking everyone wants to do between attempts mean Holy shock can be cast 12x before a fight for roughly 5k on average a pop, I typically do this only because holy shock cost such a low amount and my spirit raid buffed is around 2500 or 2600 depending on group make up. During the fight I focus primarily on the dps but if tank was dropping fast during the debuff I would throw a HL or holy shock on him because my thought are if he dies well the fight is over. When the adds pop out I tried using Light of Dawn on the stack dps which healed 4-6 dps for about 3k - 5k so totally amount healed is on average 20k healed so 10k would go to the MT because of Beacon.
I guess my question is my over healing my fault or my class?
Is my over healing a bad thing if I’m still about 50% on mana by the spike phase on magmaw?
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I have a HPally aswell, and I'm overhealing a lot, mainly due to those factors :
1 ) Everytime I judge, I get healed, wether I need it or not.
2 ) Everytime I heal someone, I get healed, wether I need it or not
3 ) Everytime I heal someone, my beacon get healed wether he need it or not.
I always check my overhealing and I'm often around 20-25% overhealing, and 80% of my overhealing is due to Beacon, Protector and Enlightened Judgement. I don't run OOM anyway (or it's REALLY rare I do) so it's not really a problem.
If you get whispered about overhealing, check your mana. If you were OOM, it's a problem, otherwise, it's not.

This. Paladins are bound to overheal with the way we work. We're constantly overhealing ourselves with PotI, and Bacon can lead to overhealing.
Just ask the Priest if he understands how Paladins work, and if not, link him what spells overhealed. Just like most people never understood Disco Priests didn't show high on meters because their absorbs > direct heals, he may just not understand WHY you are overhealing.

This goes for all healers: Overhealing is only a problem if players are dying or you are going out of mana. Otherwise, overhealing is "not being efficient" but that by itself doesn't lead to raid wipes or a failure to win a boss event.
Especially if you chose to spec for Crit then chances are you are landing heals bigger than needed. Depending on the fight dynamics you maybe using Light of Dawn on any 6 players regardless of their percentage health for the Beacon Tank. When you take Protector of the Innocent and heal anyone directly while you are at full health that is an Overheal but that isn't necessarily a problem. If you take Enlightened Judgments, anytime you use Judgment and are at full health that is an overheal. If you are in melee range to use Seal of Insight for mana gain including using Crusader Strike for a quick Holy Power charge, you are probably healing yourself.
Overhealing is a reflection of inefficiency which may or may not be a problem. They need to look why they wiped at 10% because I have a feeling even if the 2M was redirected into "full efficient heal" it wouldn't have mattered.

To answer your question TKitch my mana went real low about the 3 time (10%) we spiked him but I popped my arcane torrent as well as divine plea and would judge magmaw. This typically got me back up to around 60-70% mana. This could have also been to the fact though healer healing the MT died so I was on double duty both healing tank and dps. I believe at the wipe I had round 40% mana maybe a little less.
Mana is a large problem but at what cost?
I guess my take is I would rather be proactive than a dps die. I try to keep dps in that fight around 60% except right after he drops the tank out of his mouth and begins to shoot lava on everyone I try and top people off to prevent them from going to roughly 20%.

Even in Heroics dungeons, you can easily end up with millions directly healed and millions overheal because as we've discussed a lot of our heals are automatic and aren't "smart". Throw in using any personal buffs like Avenging Wrath slights overhealing even higher.
I guess the real answer is to the original poster is to do some of your own analysis. Run any of the popular performance monitors like Recount. Throw your log at worldoflogs.com. In general I would expect 25%-30% "overheal" from any healer. Any healer can be expected to do 3 million healing in a boss event which should be easily 1 million overheal without doing anything wrong and no way to redirect that healing some place better.
Part of the problem in answering the question is I never look at overheal when analyzing raid wipes. I personally can only say how much I overheal on wins not wipes. The first question when someone dies late in the fight, especially when it is a tank, "Did the healers go out of mana?" or "Where they in a bad spot?" where way down the list is "Who is overhealing?"

I judge quite frequently I wouldnt say I do it every GCD but i do must of the time for the mana regen on it. I do throw in a CS every now and again to get that extra HP but I will work on doing it more.
