Worse that could happen is you fail, the group wipes and they blame you and kick you. I learned my Cata tanking skills with guild runs. Fail all you want, eventually you'll learn it if your guild is patient enough, and they should be since they know you're learning the ropes.

Mark targets, and make sure the dps acknowledge that they are going to cc those targets. Nothing like ´oh, you wanted me to sheep the moon?´. Ask the warlocks if they are glyphed for fear etc.
explain boss fights. Even if everyone says they know how to do them, explain them anyway. A lot of DPS get kicked from groups as soon as they mention they´ve never done a boss... this has caused them to not speak up and admit it is their first time. Make sure everyone knows who is picking up the purple trog, or who is going to mark the first faceless add to die in GB.
Use your defensive cooldowns constantly, even on trash. Those 2 and 3 minute -20% damage should be used on every trash pull near the beginning (when the most targets are beating on you). Wipes don´t happen because of burst damage, it happens because of OOM issues.
Coordinate interrupts with classes that have 10 sec cds. There are fights like the first boss in TOT where you may have to alternate your interrupts with another player in order to interrupt all the big spells.
So to sum it up.. Communicate and make sure everyone knows their responsibilities.

I am a really, really average tank. Well, maybe a bit poorer than average. Not really a terribly good tank at all.
And... the first time I ran a heroic (it was a pug, mind you) we wiped twice. And I got lots of nice shiny loot. And a chaos orb. And... about half of the gear I was wearing at the start of the run was the crafted pvp set which was better tanking gear than my pve set.
So... it wasn't a perfect experience, but it wasn't really all that bad.
Just make sure to CC one mob in each pull.
Be polite, ask the same of others and it should be fun.

Tank a few regulars get your setup right understand the basics of every instance on normal and on heroic it won't change TO much at least on non boss fights. Read up on the difference for boss fights and understand when to and when not to CC. IF you can do that you should be fine. I jumped right in tanking on my warrior A little bit of practice and I was able to handle everything.

If the larger guild that absorbed your smaller guild, isn't interested in getting another tank ready for raids, then they are fail and you should probably look for a better guild.
I don't know of any guild that has more tanks than they know what to do with. Even if they only use you for a backup tank, they still need to get you ready. I can't count how many times the "Main" tank couldn't make raids because of real life and we had to scramble to find a tank to fill his spot for the night.
