Totem Twisting is a method where you switch back and forth between two totems of the same elemental type... This is because Totems don't operate like a Paladin's auras, but instead work by "pulsing" out the buffs they provide. So, it's possible to "Totem Twist" and provide
BOTH melee and spell haste, at the same time
. (It may be possible to provide armor from Stoneskin and AP buffs from Strength of Earth, at the same time... I'm not sure)
The problem is, it's very intensive, if you really want to provide both buffs at once, and it takes a global cooldown every time you want to switch your totems. Your personal ability to DPS or to heal might suffer greatly.
Frankly, it doesn't seem worth it to me. And the more people who do it, the more motivated Blizzard will be to nerf or alter us in order to prevent it. They obviously intend that we have a choice between providing this buff or that buff, NOT both at once by ourselves.

Totem twisting is a relic of a long ago time. Basically, before Lich King, Strength of Earth totem only gave strength (it made sense because at the time, Shaman's main dps stat was strength, not agility). Then you had 2 air totems. You had Grace of Air (which no longer exists) which gave Agility, and you had Windfury Totem which gave non-shamans the ability to do what our Windfury does now (extra attacks, not like the current WF totem which is just melee haste). The WF totem didn't work on shamans that already had the WF enchant on their weapon. It was strictly for other classes.
The WF totem pulsed like Tremor totem does, or like Healing Stream. It pulsed, you got 5 seconds of WF time (or whatever the timer was), then you'd drop GoA so the rogues in your group would have the AGI buff AND windfury at the same time. You keep alternating them so you'd essentially have 2 air totem buffs at the same time. It was easy to do for shamans at the time because you didn't have the rotation you have now. You had like 2 skills every 10 seconds to use (Stormstrike and Earth Shock). You sat there and prayed for a WF hit on your big 2h weapon.
Now we come to present day.... There is no Grace of Air totem. So which 2 totems does he want you to twist? None of the existing totems apply a timed buff that I can think of.
So the real question is, in what language do you want to tell these people to F off?

Just nit-picking but Totem Twisting only ever existed in TBC. So you didnt use a 2h weapon, you used 2 slow 1hers with WF on both.

I didn't play in BC, so I'm curious, why would Rogues not use main-hand poison back then?

The windfury totem gave a temporary weapon buff as opposed to a character buff like BoM. Since Poisons are temporary buffs and you can only have 1 temp buff per item, anyone using poisons on their MH didn't get the superior WF buff.
