Because not all necro's are 'bad'; some are good, as long they stay on topic and add something to the thread.

I'd rather someone necro'd an old thread which is relevant to whatever they want to say than start a new topic

Right, there are a lot of 'bad' ones, but locking all topics that are more then 3 months old would be a bad idea.

It is true that not all necros are bad, but the vast number of the ones that are makes me wonder whether an auto-lock might actually be more help than harm.

lol I'm sorry but comparing thread locking to killing an animal? Really? Come on now.
/agree with noice, that would probably be the best option, I don't see any harm in auto-lock other than the fact that it would be time/labor intensive for the staff (imo more-so than dealing with time-sensitive necros)
The necros don't really hurt anything, they're just annoying, but I'd say the same of an auto-lock, it wouldn't hurt anything, any thread that goes 3 months without a response probably doesn't need a response and could always be linked to in a new thread pertaining to the same subject if/when someone does come along with new info or a new perspective.... it would however end the dumb "lol i can rez threads" necros we've been seeing so much of lately.

It's not comparing an old thread to a dog. It's comparing the act of locking a thread because it might be necro'd to the act of putting an animal because it might attack someone. There is a difference.
I think a warning message might be the best change, but it might also cause an increase in new threads rather than acceptable thread resurrects.

Stupid analogies get pointed out as stupid all the time, if you don't want it to happen don't make a ridiculous exagerated analogy.

Anyway, if you think a necro was un-warranted, just report the thread.
