Questions for PUG healers and Off-healers

My first question is directed at people who sign up as main healer with the LFD tool. Do you, or would you, get offended/upset if someone else healed the group?
Specifically between pulls
, though hearing the other side of my second question would be interesting also.
I'm a Feral Druid, so I technically don't need my mana during a fight. So my theory is, after the last mob drops, it's better for
me
to switch out and top off the group since we don't have to wait for my mana to regen. This leads to shorter down time between pulls since the healer doesn't have to regen/drink as much. Is this a sound idea, or would healers see it as someone butting in on their "territory"?

My second question is directed at people who
can heal
but sign up as something else. When do you get to the point in a PUG where you start healing, or do you never do that? I'm not talking about fights that go smoother with multiple healers that are arranged before hand, but PUG fights where you're mid-fight and the main healer just can't keep everyone alive.
I've never actually switched out and started healing the group when the main healer was alive, mostly because it just seems really really insulting. Plus there's the fact that it's uncoordinated so you'll end up with over heals and wasted potential. I
have
switched into Bear form and taken over tanking, but only
after
the main tank has died. It's one thing if the person is dead, but it just seems really bad to do it if they're still alive even if it
might
stop a wipe (especially bad doing it to the tank since that won't solve anything).

The reason I'm asking is tonight I ran a handful of instances. Most went fine, however for one we had a tank who couldn't hold aggro very well. Which meant mobs were running around and people were taking extra damage. Our healer was pretty good and kept everyone alive for the most part, but he was burning extra mana doing it. Between pulls he'd top the group off and if I remembered I'd switch out and toss
Innervate
on him, but again it just seemed insulting to actually heal people during our down time. I did do the rezzing the one time it was needed, but that's about it.
Another instance with a different group, our tank was doing a pretty good job, but our main healer was having trouble. The tanks health was yo-yo-ing a lot, and the little bit of AoE damage the group was taking would never get healed. On several occasions the tank died, one of which I was able to pick up the mobs quick enough to finish the fight (the other I picked them up but died immediately after). We weren't making large pulls, these were just the normal single pods of three or four mobs. We had a hunter who was trapping things, but his pet kept breaking his own CC for some reason. So at some point would you have said enough is enough and started healing?
We finished both of these instance, with both having one wipe each and several more individual deaths. They were far from the worst PUGs I've been in, but with the instances getting more difficult with BC Heroics and higher level instances, I just wanted to ask about the 'general rules' for situations like these. Frankly, while I don't like it, I don't particularly mind wiping as long as we can finish the instance; and I'd rather take 30 seconds extra between pulls or take an extra death than listen to someone ^&*!@ about me "stealing their job". So I figured I'd ask here before I actually attempted either of these during a PUG.

Has anyone actually ever confronted you, telling you that it feels insulting when you do this? Or are you just being paranoid?

As a Holy priest I approve if you heal the group while I drink/regain mana between pulls, thats awesome.
Offhealing in a fight should only occur if : Main healer is OOM / Dead or fight goes to hell , most of the times the group will die anyway but you are welcome to try :)

No, but then I hardly ever do it. It was more of a 'is this an accepted/tolerated practice' question, especially since when you use the LFD tool you sign up
as
a role.
It does bother me sometimes, though. If a DPS ends up prolonging a fight because they're busy off-healing instead of reducing the boss' health, it's pretty annoying. The longer a fight goes, the more of my mana you're wasting. Just trust me with the damage and KILL PLEASE
That was my biggest worry about switching to healing mid fight. Since I'm Feral I actually have to stop DPSing (mostly) to shift into humanoid form to cast any heals, but then the converse would be you can't DPS when you're dead. I guess it probably just comes down to the individual situation.
Thanks everyone.

The way the game is designed, is everyone has very specialized roles.
If you have to offheal during the fight, it's likely that the healer isn't good enough, and should be replaced. So I could understand them getting upset. Personally I would take it as a hint, thank the party for giving me a shot, and leave group.
I am pretty sure that topping off people between pulls is a good idea. Innervate is also a good idea, however maybe it's better saved for cases when healer is going OOM in fight.

Don't skip your day job, so, don't step out of fights to heal. ^^ But, personally, my biggest peeve atm (next to my guild tanks thinking they are bad tanks if they use CC) is the people who stand around like lemons with half health while their healer drinks up.
Tanks/DPS: just sit down and eat some plain food you buy from the inn keeper. It won't run you bankrupt (although I had some people telling me that mana was free, while they had to pay for the food. O.o), and overall the run will go a lot faster.

I play a boomkin most of the time, so basically my gear will let me be fairly effective at off healing. That said, I don´t do it except
1. We´ve already wiped and there is a particular point in the fight where a small amount of time healing is effective to get over a bump. This is really true on a few heroic acheivements
2. The very end of a boss fight where things are getting nilly.. everyone is low on health, the healer is out of mana etc. I´ve had plenty of fights over the past few months where keeping another dps alive for 10 seconds is vital... especially the final boss in BRC where he may be the one kiting the 3 adds.
but in reality, you shouldn´t be healing during a fight. If you are healing, you aren´t dpsing, which means the fight will last longer anyway.

I queue as a DPS, not as a healer. While that comes with (relatively) long queue times and being treated like dirt (sometimes), that also comes with the implied idea that I have no obligation to heal others. I don't
have
to heal you if I don't want to (but as a general rule though, I will cheerfully do this if not being bugged about it, or if I'm not low on mana)
However, I will heal the tank if he needs it,
and
if the healer is incapable of doing so. Offended? Do a better job then. However, if the healer is competent but the tank is not, then I will heal him until the combat is over, and then stand far away when the inevitable wipe occurs.
Finally, I will liberally throw in a battle rez on the tank (even bad ones), if only to prevent a wipe.

I'm more annoyed by characters with the ability to heal standing there at under half while I'm drinking. Or the ones that just sit there at the wipe while I run back.
I don't mind residual healing so why care if someone else tops of the group out of combat?

If I'm out of combat, and I notice that I have 3-5 stacks of Maelstrom Weapon on me, I'll throw a fast heal on whoever is the lowest... Sometimes, I'll even do it with no stacks (depending on the speed of the group).
If we're in an AoE intensive fight, I'll drop a 5-stack Maelstrom Healing Rain down to soak up some damage... but for the most part, I've never really had to step up and heal in someone else's place (well, unless they die, then I instantly go into healer mode).
I have, however, had to step up and tank quite a bit on my characters that can tank (hell, even on my Hunter I've had to pick up the slack when the tank dies... kiting things is a lot more fun when there's 5 of them!).
I did get "yelled" at once for casting too many Chain Heals as DPS in a heroic... so sometimes, healers do get mad when they think you don't trust them... so you've just got to let it go and focus on DPS (until someone dies, then all bets are off).
