I have leveled 3 chars to level 85, I also have a level 84 hunter.
During leveling I have sent all cloth drops to my tailoring char. Despite that, my tailoring char isnt higher than 491 in tailoring. Am I being unlucky with cloth drops or is it just very very low drop rate on embersilk (compared to netherweave in BC and frostweave in WOTLK)?
Please enlighten me.

It does seem that it has a lower drop rate. I have a better chance getting it in dungeons. Think the best drop I have seen for my tailor has been 4 cloth. Its not easy but has a chance to make a very nice income with the bags that we can craft.

I was able to hit about 504 skill level on my Mage, after doing 3 zones of questing on my Boomkin, and all 5 zones on my Mage. With a ton of dungeons in there. After, I bought all the cloth on the AH (between 80-100g/stack). Including the Volatiles (~15-25g per), I spent probably 6k extra to hit 525. Worst part is, I can hardly sell anything, anything I saw on the AH under the price of a Heavenly Shard, I DE'd (second profession) and took what I had to buy recipes for enchanting. While I was leveling my Tailoring also, I made 5 Dreamcloth, I used 1 to buy the dps belt recipe, and used the other 4 to make it, market is dropping on my server, currently at 4.5k gold. The belt was around 9-11k couple weeks ago.
So, hopefully you can profit. The part I hate most about Tailoring, I have to use my own Chaos Orbs.. And Dreamcloth.. Bop.. :(
Makes me have to run heroics to hopefully get to the end, and maybe snag an orb.

Update....Now I´ve leveled 4 chars to 85 through questing.
And my tailor isnt higher than 499 skill. Insane if you ask me. Is it supposed to be that slow to level?

What the heck are you doing?
Just follow this:
http://www.tarouwowguides.com/content/wow_tailoring_guide_1_525_leveling_tailoring_guide
Get to work on getting the things you need for the 500-525 range.
BTW: Tol Barad Dailies and Dungeons are great places for Embersilk cloth.
Cheers.

I found it pretty easy compared to some other profs, and, more importantly, actually profitable at the higher levels if you make the right things.
You're 491 tailoring. So at least you're past what (for me anyway) was the tough bit, which is the insane amount of frostweave you needed to get through the wrath levels.
If you're farming your own embersilk, then do it on your tailor character - the misleadingly-named
scavenging
skill still works in cata content, I get way more cloth drops on my mage tailor than any other character.
Also, if you're going to commit to an hour or so of just farming it's probably worth grabbing a
treasure finding
potion - it's not the cheapest thing ever, but the
chests
nearly always contain embersilk, and the occasional volatile element, which is exactly what you'll be needing lots of. Don't do anything but mass-murder humanoids for the duration though, that way you maximise the benefit.
