Does anyone know how to write a macro that would cast thrash, and when I modified my keybind with ctrl that it would cast Swipe? I can't seem to make my macro cast the bear form of swipe.
It would just clear up that extra button space and make aoe tanking a bit easier.

I did that. It's still not casting swipe when using ctrl. It'll thrash, which is the easy part.

Dummy check: Did you actually drag the macro onto your bar? I have a bad habit of writing macros then forgetting to actually put them on the bar. I just tested the macro above and it definitely works.

Well after looking into it, hahaha. It wasn't that I didn't have it on my bar. But I had ctrl-5 bound for my pet bar. Turns out when you disable it the above works. Something to keep in mind if others are having problems with macros. Thanks guys

Yep, modifier macros only work when the modifier key is not bound to something.
I think shift is also bound to things by default so that might be difficult, too.
Why use ctrl? Isn't that the hardest modifier key to reach? Both alt and shift seem way more comfortable.
Another thing you might want to think about: Instead of filling your main bar with modifier macros you can just bind one of the other action bars (e.h. when using the default interface the one right above the 1-9 bar) to shift-X or alt-X or even ctrl-X. That frees up a lot of macro space and is way easier than making a modifier macro for every ability. On my Druid I ran out of character specific macro slots (I'm also using mouseover macros for my resto spec) and replacing modifier macros by a modifier-keybound action bar helped a lot.

If you're comfortable with button stuck inbetween other buttons... (Same goes to using number keys for action bars)
My main modifiers are Alt and Control. I'm using Shift, but for abilities I use rarely, if ever. Or very calculated. (Death Grip being one example)
And all action buttons remapped to Fx keys.

Personally, I like using control because of it's unique position on the very corner of the keyboard. If I go to hit control, I'm not likely to accidently press another key instead, which is not always the case with Alt and Shift (DAMN YOU WINDOWS KEY! ( YAY Blizzard for an option to disable the windows key!) ).

I personally can't reliably hit either controly or alt without my hand being extremely uncomfortable (joint issues and such), so I just have a crapton of shift modified keybinds.

Shift is in between buttons but it is much closer to wasd and the pinky is naturally right over it (at least with my hand and keyboard size). I have to stretch to reach ctrl which is uncomfortable.
I also use alt a lot because it's very easy to reach with the thumb which isn't used for anything else anyway and which allows me to keep a finger on wasdf to e.g. strafe at the same time.
