Strand
Only if you feel your laptop getting really hot on the bottom or it's pushing a lot of hot air out the exhaust on the side. If it is, try running a vacuum over the vents really fast. Don't hoover over them to long. This may clear away any dust or debris that may be slowing the fan down or causing decreased air flow. If that doesn't work, then maybe a cooling fan could be the way to go, although this can't guarantee increased performance.

QFT. If you have a computer that is unable to handle the graphics requirements of WoW, then your FPS and latency (to a lesser extent) will suck. Only way around it: Buy new tech.
Wow, you have to love people who bring nothing to the table when someone is asking for help.
Make sure you are running the latest video drivers on your computer, it may help a little bit. Also run Windows Updates to make sure you are on the latest and greatest for Vista. While you are in-game try disabling your anti-virus program, it might help with the strain on your processor somewhat. Your computer may just be getting old and overheating. Its the one downside to using a laptop for gaming, the heat that your computer generates over time is going to just wear down the parts faster then if you had a desktop. Low to mid range laptops are just not made for gaming. They do not have the proper cooling to handle the heat your processor and video card will create. If updating your drivers and trying to disable your anti-virus while gaming won't work, you can try investing in an external cooling device. In my experience though, they don't do a whole lot to help the overheating. Strand does make a good point though. Run the vacuum quickly over all your laptop vents. It should suck out some of the dust that is clogged in there and might help it out a lot.

Hmm...
Did you try turning on Vertical Sync?
Did you turn on the option in Interface to "Emphasize My Spell Effects?"
Besides that, I don't have much more advice except the basic "update your drivers and stuff" and "buy a new computer" =(.
I actually caved and got a new laptop for myself. The difference between the two in terms of running WoW is absolutely staggering. (Asus G72gx vs Inspiron 14)

Never thought about using a vacuum to clear out dust. Makes sense, and I'll try it. I'm currently updating Vista, but I'm curious, how do I check if I'm running the latest video drivers? If I don't have the latest, how can I update them?
Well in most cases your laptop would have either an Intel video chipset, ATI, or Nvidia. There is usually a little sticker on your laptop case somewhere that will say what your video card is, but if not, the best way to find out exactly what you have would be to go to your start menu, click on Run or go to where you can do a search in the start menu and type in dxdiag. Go to Display and it will tell you the device name, chip type and whatnot. Under the drivers section you will see a version and date. I would say anything before November/December is out of date as they usually release a new driver set every couple of months.
If its Nvidia or ATI, just go to their website, they will have a Drivers section, and both sites lead you through the process, its painless. If you have an Intel chipset, most likely when you run Windows Updates, it will be in there. Nvidia and ATI's will be as well, but they aren't always the latest drivers.

Enabling vertical sync within a game forces the fps to match your monitor's refresh rate. Most LCD screens refresh at 60hz, so if you enabled vertical sync, it wouldn't matter how great your video card is, your fps never go higher then 60 fps. Personally, I see no reason to enable it as its not really going to force your computer to give you higher framerates, its just going to force a top end maximum fps to match the refresh rate of your screen.
By all means try it out to see if you get better performance though. Within the video settings in WoW there should be a field in there that says Vertical Sync. You may also be able to get into your ATI Catalyst Control Center and within the settings (not sure where, I have an nvidia card) you can set the vertical sync in there, which will actually force all programs to use vertical sync....again I see no reason to do this though, its not going to make anything perform better.

It wouldn't hurt to get Windows 7. Vista was a terrible OS, and now that W7 is more widely used, you will see fewer drivers and updates coming out. Honestly though, you will have to spend $100+ for Windows 7 and you may not get that much more performance in games when you upgrade. The OS will use fewer resources, but its not so much better that your games will suddenly run better. It might be worth dealing with it for a while and saving up some money to buy a new computer.
