I don't know what the "best" one is, but I really like Comodo. Extremely easy to use, and it gives you control of a lot more than most other programs.

Avast has been mentioned a lot on these boards as one of the best, i personally use avg internet security though.

Hard to say what the best is.
I've always had issues with Norton in the past. I currently have a subscription to Mcafee, and it is working well. I do visit websites of questionable content, but also avoid any suspect content.

Honestly, if you just want free and easy, it's hard to find a better option than
Microsoft's own
.
Older Norton/Symantec was tragically awful. With 2009 they finally stopped letting the room full of chimpanzees write their software. If your Norton is that old, upgrade it. (Personally I'm using Norton 2011 right now.)
People seem to like AVG but for me it liked to freeze my system at inopportune times.
McAfee....no. Just...
no
.

I use spybot S&D, Malwarebyte's anti-malware, Ad-Aware, AVG antivirus and Comodo.
With the kind of sites I visit, its necessary, believe me.
