I guess I want to make the most of the game. I know raiding isn't the be all and end all of the game and that plenty of people enjoy farming for mounts, leveling alts and professions.
Also, raiding is nice test of ones skill and ability and I enjoy the challenge. The wiping, retrying and retwinking strategies and eventually downing a boss.
If you do not believe your current guild is able or willing to do what you want, then find one that is consistent with your goals.
This. I know to some it sounds cold and selfish, but this is a game that YOU are paying money for for YOUR enjoyment, and if your guild doesn't want to do things that you want to do, even if they're your bestest best RL buddies, you've got to find one that will.

Well, i wonder what stops the OP from forming his own raid, with the people from his guild? He is probably familiar with them, which is a good start. When there is no initiative from anyone to start raiding, would they mind if someone took the first step? In my guild, my guilds GM was kinda lazy about starting with the raid progression, so i took the first step. It didn't only start one raid group, but two, as i inspired the others with my motivation and gave them some confidence. Maybe you could try that too, OP? Make an even in the calendar, and invite everyone who is lvl 85. See what you get?

What Thror said is true, and is something I neglected to consider when I gave my earlier advice.
I used to run some raids back in Wrath. You really don't need that intimate knowledge of classes to run a raid, IMO. The most important things to me are how well do you know the fights, well enough to explain them to others? Well enough to form/borrow a winning strategy? Also, do you know the basics of each class? You don't have to know a Balance druid's rotation, or what their CC attacks are called, but you should know what they can and can't do. You don't want to be asking a Resto Druid to remove a disease or dispel magic (if they didn't grab the talent), for example.
Also, how well do you know the people you play with? It's one thing to BS in Vent and get along well, it's another to know that they are capable of getting out of the fire or can kite adds or whatever. Now, admittedly often the only way to find those things out is to raid with them. You'll learn who you can rely on and who you can't.

(Also, I know that there is a simple fishing rod equipped when it should be the 2 handed axe from SFK)
Arced War Axe
isn't too viable at level 85.

If you really want to start raiding , i'd recommend joining another guild.
Also win thread name.

I agree with Thror, but don't think you owe them anything. If it doesn't work out, make sure you give them a nice goodbye and preferably have another Guild figured out before you leave.
And here I was waiting for a thread about The Clash.
