Illidan agreed to to turn fight the Legion at the behest of his unrequited love. Arthas was, at the time, an agent of the Lich King. The Lich King was an agent of the Legion.

I would recommend you read Arthas: Rise of the Lich King (you can get it for like $6 in paperback).
Basically, Illidan works for the Burning Legion, and Arthas works for the Scourge. The Scourge was a Legion construct (you can find that in the Warcraft 3 manual), but in The Frozen Throne the Scourge broke away from the Legion and basically said "#$%^ you we're going our own way". Sylvanas and the Dreadlords tried to regain control of the Scourge, but failed.
So Kil'jaeden (2nd in command of the Legion and basically commander since Sargeras is MIA) contacts Illidan and says: "Kill the Lich King for me and I'll give you lots of power and a place in the Legion Lords." Illidan was
very
pleased at this, so he went to get the skull of Gul'dan (most powerful Warlock ever) and used it to damage the Frozen Throne, and would have destroyed the Lich King except Maiev and Malfurion (his brother) interrupted him.
So Illidan took Kael'thas (who served him) and his blood elves and naga and attacked Northrend. Kael'thas was
pissed
at Arthas as Arhtas basically crushed his home and killed his people, while Illidan was more of the "It's just business" type. Arthas and Kael'thas dueled, and Kael'thas fled, as Arthas was too powerful. Arthas and Illidan then dueled, and once again Arthas won, leaving Illidan bleeding in the snow, and Arthas became the Lich King.
Seeing as how he was so powerful as a Death Knight that he could defeat Illidan, Illidan was a little hesitant about fighting him as the Lich King, for obvious reasons, and fled.

Illidan went after Arthas because he had a death sentence on him: Either kill the Hand of the Scourge and destroy Ner'zhul/the Armour, or else Kil'Jaeden was going to slow roast the Emo-King over a nice burning hot flame pit for the rest of his natural existence, which, after consuming the Skull of Gul'dan and going all demony, was going to be a veeeeeery long time.
