Approximately 346 is the intention for starting raids. So you should make sure everyone has mostly 346 heroic gear with a smattering of 359 epics (crafted or from rep or maybe AH if you are rich); you can get away with one or two 333 items I'm fairly sure since sometimes you don't have much choice; I know for a fact on the Paladin MT pre-raid list there were one or two 333 items listed (at the bottom, of course) as viable items if you were poor and unlucky.

I pulled top 3 damage on a successful Magmaw 10 with 344, and successfully heal BH 10 at the same level. As much as GearScore "ruined" the game in WotLK, they had a decent metric. Half of your gear one tier below your progression, the other half two tiers below.
Although, I'd recommend around around two-thirds at appropriate 346s and one-third at appropriate 333s.

i believe gearscore and item lvl are about the same
item lvl is just forced while gearscore was mainly a choice
Q-f***ing-Q.
You know what the difference between saying "2/3 Heroic geared, 1/3 Normal geared" and "Item Level of 342" is? Absolutely nothing.

I healed BoT10 at 329 without any problems (before I did any heroics). My recommendation would be to get full 346 items, gemmed and enchanted but gear doesn't mean as much as knowing the fights or skill.

I am 4/5 normal geared. Guess what's my GS?
The issue is: entrance level 85 gear is ilvl 333, while PvP crafts are ilvl 339. People replace ilvl 318 quest gear from Twilight Highland with PvP junk in order to get around the current system. Cataclysm boosting starts right here.

Context clues FTW. Since the initial discussion was "What ilvl to start trying raid runs?" my sentence was implying 5-mans. Also, I was mostly just railing against the idiot saying GS and ilvl were the same thing, and implying they are a useless metric that's continuing to "ruin the game."
Expanding on my statement:
Let's say you're raid-ready at more or less a 342 AiL, which is roughly two-thirds of your gear from Heroics and one-third of your gear from Normals. There is still zero difference between not taking someone with an AiL below 340 and not taking someone because they are still in greens.
To hearken back to my previous life as a PuG organizer, we didn't take any random people into Naxx if they didn't have what would now be measured as ~187 AiL. Except instead of crunching numbers we Armory'd and inspected and checked for almost all Heroic level gear. Now it can be easier for a player to determine if he's ready to try the next tier of content, and since the 333 tier requires 329 to queue, I think around 343 is an acceptable time to start trying the beginning of the 359 tier.

IWhat really irks me about AiL is that it show's stuff in your bank / bags, so it shows my having 350 AiL, because I have an Epic Belt / Necklace from my DPS gear, inside my bags. What am I supposed to do, delete them just to get an accurate figure?
If you log out in the gear you want to check, wait until the armory refreshes, then go check your advanced armory page, it'll tell you what the ilvl of your currently equipped gear is.
Would it be nice if we could do this in game? Yes. Is it tedious? Yup. But it's doable.

Some PvP stuff is actually better than crafted blues or rep pieces (except for the epics of course), and even some dungeon drops.
At least the plate ones are, not sure about the others. Wouldn't you just be able to put it in your bank and then check your in-game character iLevel?

AiL includes the bank. Only in-game option is to sell the other stuff and buy it back.
Actually, ilvl (and GS) are more valid than ever now. Before we had many stats and while some piece would have better GS than another, it could have such a terrible itemization for certain class, that putting it on would result in dps loss.
Now our primary stats (int, agi and str) are the dominant contribution for our dps/healing. All the pieces with the same ilvl have the same amount of primary stats. So the higher the ilvl is - the higher the main stats are - the better dps/healing done. Yes, you can still put +hit item as a healer, but you can at least reforge some of that hit, so it's not that bad after all.
I agree. Of course, I've always been a proponent of responsible GS use.
Stealth fades from \ tag.

That's... really stupid. Also, your quote boxes need fixing ;)

/ins
/run local t,c,u,k=0,0,UnitExists(“target”)and”target”or”player”for i=1,18 do k=GetInventoryItemLink(u,i)if i~=4 and k then t=t+select(4,GetItemInfo(k))c=c+1 end end c=c>0 and print(UnitName(u),t/c)
This macro should output your current target's avarage item level.
Does it skip shirts and tabards?
Also, it doesn't have an output line.
D'oh.
