Well, I'm lvling a mage myself at the moment, currently at 81. I haven't tried arcane, but I've been using a fire spec in instances and frost for soloing. At 30 it's not too interesting, even though you have blast wave and impact, but as you progress, fire becomes quite the AoE monster. Once you get dragon's breath and imp. flamestrike (so, at lvl 53), it startes getting interesting, and then living bomb ups the ante again. Admittedly I was heirloomed to the gills, including 2x trinket (restoring mana every time I got a killing blow), which meant I rarely had mana problems.

Even then, you'll never survive long enough to run out of mana if questing in a fire spec and you draw more that 2 mobs.
Ugh. Don't talk like that just from your own personal experience. I leveled from 82.5 to 83 aoe grinding as fire in southern uldum. I levelled mostly as fire, going frost when I got bored, and I didn't have any heirlooms.

What's this "Arcane" you mentioned? Kidding of course. The only people that play arcane are those who want to see the big crits from just before they die.
I just switched from levelling frost to using arcane - I can kill most mobs in a few hits before they reach me, in pvp I'm getting more kills and higher damage than frost with no real loss to survivability. Definitely enjoying arcane more than frost for pvp, pve and dungeons.

Once the 4.0 talent changes arrived I switched to arcane* on what was a level 32 mage at the time and levelled all the way to 85 on it, and let me tell you, the days of
"...big crits from just before they die.."
are long gone. Well, the dying bit anyway.
All mages can shield & freeze things. Arcane has a nice boost to your
basic mana shield
that makes you more powerful and keeps things away from you, running away (not that you need to do that much) is
faster
and things won't catch you anyway 'cause they're basically
running through treacle
as soon as you've hit 'em with your
main nuke
, which still kicks out the 'big crits' the way it always did.
And
arcane
machine gun
is always fun, now for the cheap price of zero mana!
Just don't try to AoE things. Not ever.
This
might as well not exist, ignore it...
*I just think it's more mage-y. A bit like subtlety is rogue-y...

Hear hear. When was the last time people actually played for the joys of a class, and not purely to min/max? Especially during levelling, which is one of the few times you can get away with that?
