Hi so recently I started listening to a podcast many people may have heard of as "Gamer Dork". In this particular podcast the guys were discussing a dubious rundown of "The greatest games of all time" and inevitably WoW cropped up somewhere in the top 5.
After having reviewed the previous games for around a minute giving considered yet derogatory comments on the selections the WoW review simply said (and I qoute)
"Never played it"
"Its not really a game to be fair"
These mysteriously laconic statements somewhat intrigued me. If they had torn it to pieces I would'nt have made this post but it left me non-plussed. I just wondered if anyone could throw any light on this subject. Is there a huge underclass of anti-wow militants out there like this ,what do they say about it? Why is not really a game in these guys eyes?
TL:DR do gamers hate wow? , I realise with 12 million subscriptions this sounds kinda dumb but nevertheless, what are their arguments?

TL:DR do gamers hate wow?
It's generally acceptable to hate on things that are popular. IE, WoW, Justin Bieber, Call of Duty, etc.

Thing I dont get is in my eyes Its a reasonably intelligent game. I dont really put it in the same catagory as justin bieber and call of duty.
I've played Call of Duty and after about 5 minutes I just get so intensely bored of pressing one button I have to go and watch paint dry just to get my neurons firing again.
To me Wow is not a brainless pursuit, justin bieber and call of duty (IMO) kinda are..

TL:DR do gamers hate wow?
Absolutely. I started playing wow shortly after BC came out. But the truth is that if I had my way I would have played sooner. So why didn't I? Peer pressure.
I was involved in another MMO and in hindsight the only thing that really kept the community going was its hate of wow. It's only in hindsight that I realize how sick that was. But when you are the big man people have fun $%^&ting on you just because you're the big man.
I've meet people who hate wow who have never even played the game. It's sad but true. WoW is the only game that I have ever seen where, if I am at a party and the game gets mentioned, people will spontaneously give hate on the game. It's just weird.
It's a social thing. It's like if you play it you're marked as something worse than a nerd...
(By social standards. I don't put stock into that @#$%.)

Yup... its cool to hate popular things.
While I personally never really got that into hating things just to hate them (well, except for New Kids on the Block... but thats a different story), I can see the reasons to bow down to peer pressure... the nail that sticks up gets hammered down, or so it goes.
Regardless: Saying WoW is not a game is like saying the Twilight series are not books. Do I like Twilight? Not really... never read them, don't have any real desire to read them. Do I think they're not literature because I don't like them? Pfft... how conceited do you need to be to be able to offhandedly say something is not acceptable literature/art/media?
For the same reason I never say "This isn't art" when I'm in a museum, I will never say "This isn't a game" or "This isn't literature"... My opinion on something does not change what it is... my dislike of the concept of someone who paints a canvas white with a red square and posts it up in a museum does not change the fact that it is art.
WoW is a game. It may not be a game everyone likes, but it is a game regardless.

But hating Justin Bieber is the right thing to do.
And hating CoD is also right, because BC2 > MW2.
Also, ya, for some reason the "gaming community" as a whole seems to hate on WoW, while they sit on their couch cramming cheetos down their throat playing MADDEN MAN GRRRR THAT'S A REAL GAME!

It's just not gamers that hates Wow, But the major community does.
I could ask all my friends what they think of Wow and most of them would say it sucks of different reasons, though the biggest reason would be because of it's popular to hate it.
Offtopic: I actually like the CoD series, probably because I can play an game like in a coma.
