Rare spawns, do you prefer the vanilla system more?

In Vanilla (and still in the 1-60 zones) rare spawns are much more numerous and frequently encountered during the course of questing. You would go to a quillboar camp in the barrens, and there would be an extra mob that you knew dropped just a random green item. I think in the Barrens alone there used to be like 40 different rare spawns that you could occassionaly bump in to. They respawned very frequently, and just by questing, you would encounter one every few hours at least.
In WOTLK and Cata, there is a completely different system. The rare spawns are on much longer timers and drop blue items. There are also not many of them.. most zones have 2 or 3 only. You almost never just bump into them while questing ( probably a lot of people will say of the óne´ time they did).. but for the most part, they are for people who go to that spot looking specificially for that mob. With Cata, the loot is even more defined than in Wotlk. In Cata, almost every rare spawn drops a single item (in wotlk, they all dropped a single item, but the stats varied).
The added problem is because of the extreme rarity of them, their predictable location, and the value of their drops (blue boe items), a lot of players use add-ons that detect them from pretty far away... which again means that you are just very unlikely to bump into them while questing.
I leveled my druid to 85, I have my 9 other alts up to level 83. Since Cata started, I have not seen a single rare spawn except for the one I camped in Twilight Highlands because my druid needed the leather boots.
The reason I started this thread is because on a different server, I am leveling more alts...and while taking my Tauren Priest through North Barrens, I bumped into 2 different rare spawns.... and it just reminded me how much more fun it is to bump into them while questing rather than camp one for hours.

I like Aetsu's proposal.
I think it would be fun if some of the items the last category in his list dropped were purely flavor items, archaeology style.

I don't know about you guys, but I encounter plenty of rare spawns while leveling, and they've all got guaranteed green drops. I haven't had a single blue drop from a silver dragon monster. I do, however, enjoy the bonus XP from them.
Edit: Sorry, just realised I misinterpreted the OP. No, I didn't run across any rare spawns from 81-85. Fair point.
Aestu's proposal is good only if they were flavor items. Otherwise, you'd end up with guild groups camping them (world dragons, anyone?)

This ^
I'd love more RP gear. As a completely separate thought: You should be able to equip some of the grey named archaeology items.

There are rare spawns in the new zones....just most of them are actual group fights, such as
this guy,
who drops one of the best
Feral Druid/Hunter
weapons outside of a raid or the return of
Garr
in Mt Hyjal.

I'd like to see some humanoid rare non-elites that fill this role. The current none-elite rares are there mostly for hunter pets imo and I like that we have rare hunter pets, and I like the big bad rares that get the guild going to take them down and have even sparked some fun world pvp surrounding their spawns...but yea some mobs that you bump into and go OO Silver dragon! and drops a green or blue is a treat I enjoy while leveling and kinda miss at max level :)

Especially as they give 2-3 times more exp then the regular mobs in the zone when you kill a rare while leveling....hm, honestly, I think I would leave them for the levelers if I ran into one in the upper zones.

I'd actually never noticed the xp difference ingame, only seen it pointed out on the forums...ingame I'm too happy to have killed the mob and got the loot :)
Also I love that they are usually interesting/different looking like the remaining blue dragonflight mobs in winterspring.

The exp given by the rares from 1-60 is 10x´s the amount given by a normal mob of that level. That is a pretty huge boost if you have rested exp

If thats how it was in Vanilla, then it's not really rare, but I feel the whole point of the Rare Elites (80-85 Cataclysm Content) is to be a treat, they're not particularly hard to kill, but still require some effort, but they give a very nice reward, I've made about 5k Gold from 3 Rare Elite Spawns (
Lady La-La's Singing Shell
, and
Terborus's Rotating Bands
x 2). They're not meant to be sought after, but as a "treat" of sorts.
Just to point out.. those are not rare elite.. they are just rare spawns. They have slightly more hps than normal mobs in that area, but none of them require a group. There are a few rare-elites in Cata like Mobus who drop blue items and require a group ( tank and healer).

I didn't actually know anything about Cata rares until this morning. I was flying around Mt Hyjal farming Obsidium Ore, and I came across something blazing in the sky. I clicked and saw it was a rare -
Blazewing
. I tried to right click in flight to get it to aggro me, but it wouldn't bite. I flew slightly ahead, plopped down on a high hill/outcropping, and flame shocked it. Soon enough, I was in possesion of
Blazewing's Furious Kilt
So, I don't know the Cata rare algorithm, but am pretty happy with it. Get to see one randomly every now and then.
Cheers.

I am also fine with the way it is. Sometimes I think people need to look up what the word "rare" means.
While I did camp Golgarok in Deepholm for his
boots
I have run into a few others just in the course of doing my thing. Was picking flowers on my priest in Hyjal and ran into Thartuk the Exile so I brought my mage in to take care of him. I want to say I have run into 4 or 5 of them so far and that is fine with me. If I ran into them all the time it wouldn't really be a rare to me :)

In vanilla the rare ones were farmed for disenchanting. The usability of green items bar melee weapons was zero. Silver mobs usually were rare elites, indicated by the silver dragon wing. It would take a group or a warlock to take them down. And added to their elite damage came the rest of the camp.

Yes, because the claims you make are just as correct Aestu......

Actually, what Aestu wrote is correct - I never encountered anyone farming rares for disenchanting, and silver mobs usually
weren't
elites. Most were just as strong as any other regular mob, nothing special about them but their name and loot.
Yep, Aestu is correct.
Basically in Vanilla ( and still in 1 to 60) rare spawns are just normal strength mobs that always drop a green item. They aren´t something you camp, they aren´t something you farm.. they are just something you occassionally bump into in monster camps.
I´m not whining, I am just saying I prefer it the old way. For instance, the scorpion in western durator.... or the one I bumped into today, a ghost near a lake in SE azh while leveling my goblin.
Call it ´casual´ but I enjoyed rares more when you didn´t have to camp them or have an add on to detect them in time to kill them.
