Give a thought to why you never find tanks. Because no one ever thinks to thank a good tank for doing his job well.
More often that not there are tanks out there they just refuse to join PUGs.

Tanks get no appreciation, and healers get less. After every instance run, I make sure to thank my healer for keeping me alive, but I'm always the first one to do it, and usually the only one. Twice, the conversation went like this: "Hey, it's easy to heal when you have a good tank" to which I always reply "It's easy to tank when your healer keeps you alive!" Meanwhile, the DPS guys are babbling about the loot they got, or arguing about who did the most damage.
Like Kubwulf says, most players are just racing to 70, and DPS is the fastest way there. DPS classes also do better in BGs. Ultimately, it comes down to numbers, and there are just not that many class/specs that are really good healers or tanks. Once you pick one of those specs, you're almost locked in; as a protection paladin, all my gear and all my talents are set up for instance tanking. Out in the world, regular questing moves at such a slow pace that the average hunter would think it were a different game entirely, and don't even get me started on what a challenge BGs are.

Tanking is a responsibility
Healing is a job
DPS is fun
That's how I see it, and makes sense why most people like DPS.

screw ups are blamed on either the tank or healer. that's why they're not as fun.
stupid dps won't wait for mobs to get within sword length of the tank, so they aggro and run AWAY from the tank, followed by a spamming of /healme... They die and "WTF L2HEAL / CRAP TANK". would u roll tank or healer if you had to put up with this?

I knoiw hunters can get that way, because of how WOW gimps us, but that aside, I agree that other players should thank each other for a good job (after all it is a group issue, not just tank/healer, but the group). I cannot remember the last group where the members did not from time to time, especially after a tough battle, say GJ! or GG!, or what ever to the whole party. No I don't specifically thank the healer or tank, I thank the group because it is a group effort.
I hope you are not meaning we need to thank the tank and healer specifically, as this would diminish the efforts of the rest of the group.
You remembered to set your pet to passive and waited 3 seconds before shooting. You get a cookie.

Because DPS > all a fact
Ok.. next time you guys are on a raid, whipe on a boss..
WHO DO GET BLAMED FIRST FOR WHIPE?
-HEALERS
WHO DO GET BLAMED SECOND FOR WHIPE?
-TANKS
I have played both classes on EG and everytime a whipe comes, its blame on healers / Tanks. So thats why DPS is funnier "Nothing is ever their fault" Except when the enrage counter blows up and boss crits tank 1shot -_-
So if You want more healers / tanks, don't blame them. Usually they know how to do their job.

Healers are now easier to find because everyone want to rock in PvP.
at 60+, I've seen more resto druids than feral druids.
Tanks will always be a problem but maybe the possible wave of Death Knights will change this.

Tanking is also a lot of work. Even when everything has gone smoothly, I'm usually a bit tired after tanking an instance on my warrior.
And of course pugs... Now I love pugging, I do it all the time and will continue to do so, but there are a lot of very unpleasant people playing this game to say the least. New players and people not familiar with an instance aren't a problem usually, when you tank you are in a good position to guide the group (and occationally give advice), it's the jerks and asses that make tanking pugs unfun. The kind of people who are critical before you even start because you aren't in T5+ gear to tank their heroic SP instance (newsflash fellas -- unless you are my friend or someone I know and like -- I'm tanking the instance because I need something there and I enjoy challenges, not so you can face-roll your way to a few easy badges), or the DPS who unload everything they have on a mob before you've touched it, and so on.
That said I have to admit that before I started playing a tank, I rarely appreciated them. Sure I watched my agro and did what I could to make things go smoothly, but I never really thought to say a nice word when I ran with a good tank. (Of course I never bitched when I ran with a bad one either.) Healers are somewhat in the same position, but they tend to be appreciated more (everyone notices that big fat heal after you've messed up and stood in the fire too long). It is a group effort for sure, I agree, but a tank easily has the most responsibility for making sure things go well in a dungeon. It's just the way it is.

maybe the above user didn't mean it like that, but I sure do! if you say "thank you so much Shatterhand" that will make me wanna take you in my group again. but if u bitch about my tanking you can be sure that I will remember you and never PUG with you again.

I'm guilty of not always thanking the tanks and DPS when we fought a hard battle. But in exchange I won't allow anyone to die and keep their healths filled whenever I can.
Tanks and Healers are fairly hard to find (except finding a healer, I'm one) and for some reason, whenever I see a LFG in the chat channel, it's always "LF Healer and Tank for (instance of your choice)" but while I try it, it's always "Healer LF Tank and DPS for (instance of your choice)".
My guild doesn't have enough DPS O_o

True...that's one of the reasons I switched to healer. Now I get slightly more respect.
The thing is, both tank and healer are pretty tough to solo. No, let me correct that. Pretty easy, but lengthy as hell. It takes you forever to kill stuff if you are either one of those. True, you find raid spot easier than DPS, even though a 5man needs 1 tank, 1 healer and whole 3 DPS. Usually the 3 DPS wait for the other 2.
I'd say that healer is also responsibility, as a response to a comment up there. Just as important as tanking, but we all know that.
4.16 am, haven't slept over the last 72+ hours, spend 50+ of them drawing. My sentences lose point, so I'll stop there...
