i like to think i'm a good tank but sometimes ppl whine about specific stat caps so i was wondering what i should shoot for for everything, mastery, expertise, hit rating, parry/dodge, just wondering where all these should be

general rule is to be hit and exp capped or near to it.
this is not a general rule at all. in fact, most progression tanks run very little of either stat.
if you want some more threat, then go ahead and pick up some expertise, but it's by no means necessary.

5 days old but seeing as how this is relevant to my dilemma I thought I'd post my input. I was doing absolutely FINE as a warrior with 2% hit and like 10 expertise (really just from 2 enchants and certain items pieces not much real effort in that) ANYWAYS yeah I was doing fine you know holding aggro and all that no problem. I get into a pug and this paladin is DECKED out. Now Im like 354 ilevel equipped but this dude could belt out 25k dps on average 40k+ on Halfus while interrupting. He had to be constantly salved, BOP'd, etc. And I'm no noob I did my rotation just fine.
Long story short I had to reforge dodge into hit to get upto 5% so the poor guy could dps to the best of his abilities. In the long run, get some hit rating. It really won't kill you. It also helps you interrupt :D

No DPS should dare to get aggro of the boss.... he's the one at fault...
or he's just lucky to get all his crits proc continuously....
doubtful that rogue will get too much aggro, our rogue out dps me, and still stay under my aggro table, with special use of what ever rogues use to keep their aggro down...

opps I'm a noob
not sure if this is how I post a link to my armory
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/thaurissan/romswar/simple
I had 9% hit and 20 expertise
(sorry if my fury gear is on when you click the link)
Um I was wondering if anyone had any soft cap sort of numbers
I know if I have 12parry and 9 dodge I need more dodge but if I only have 10 mastery does that mean I just can't tank at all?
so basically what I'm asking is for someone to post for example "when you started heroics you had 20 parry 18 dodge and 60block and 20 mastery those being soft caps?"

i do a bit over 20k on the BH boss, and i do find i have aggro problems at the beginning of the fight with most tanks. however, once vengeance builds up, good tanks seem to be ok, even with low hit and expertise, while 'less-good' tanks keep me capped the whole fight.
most of the times, the difference is rotation, not gear. however, if you are very outgeared, dps can push you. in that case, if you're going to reforge for threat, remember than expertise up to 26 will give you 2x as much value as hit.

I did say it ws a paladin pulling aggro lol and he wasn't aoeing it was all single target on Halfus while he interrupted every shadow nova. And no, I was in fact doing the correct prot tanking rotation. I fixed the threat issue by increasing my hit which was the WHOLE POINT of what I posted. Hit rating is required to keep threat when dps gets very high, you can't lol around with just 2% because no one can do over 12k forever.
Any other part of my post hard ?

So the person on halfus for interrupts was pulling agro while the MT was first starting combat. That is the ret paladin's problem, not the main tank's. There are so many other things going on with multiple drakes activated and picked up, misdirects, and burning the drakes. The main tank shouldn't have to worry about some CD blowing Ret Paladin during the opening seconds of the fight. Especially if the MT is also picking up one of the other drakes and isn't focusing on Halfus.

interrupts are off the GCD, btw - so they don't affect dps at all. however, if you were truly having tps issues, you should have increased your expertise, not your hit - it's much more valuable for threat.
