Which do you prefer and why?
I play on a low population server and pretty much always have. For the longest time, I thought that the way things went on my server was the same way they went on all servers. But after meeting people that have played on both, I know this isn't the case. Now I'm curious as to what others may think are the pros and cons to both kinds of servers (medium pop. servers as well).

Neither, I prefer medium pop.
In WotLK, I played on a low-pop server. I complained a lot because our AH was dead and everything was really dull after midnight EST. So I applied to a guild on one of the biggest servers ever. I left within a week, largely because of the lag. I loved that I could see everyone, everywhere, everyday...but even in Ulduar, I was getting like 400 ping and I got disconnected a couple times. I couldn't get used to it at all and I was hating my trial because of it.
I ended up going to a different guild on a low pop and enjoying it more. But recruiting was a nightmare there, we couldn't get people to sign up willingly to a server with 1000 or less real players. Eventually we moved to a med-high pop and it worked out well; a good AH, a lot less lag, and no ghost town. =)
A lot of people really like high-pops and in my limited experience, it is awesome, if you can get past the lag during prime raiding time or bad framerates in capital cities.(##RESPBREAK##)140##DELIM##Ashelia##DELIM##

As Ashelia said, high population servers are the best if you aren't laggy. I play on ghostlands which has 10k people on horde I think it was last time I checked. I'm locatednot too far away from the data server though, so I rarely have more than 250 latency and my computer is kinda meh, but I have about 25 to 30 FPS in orgrimmar.
Low population servers suck. The onl yreason to roll on a low pop server is to pvp, and even than that's gonna get boring after a while.

Wish I could get 25 fps in org. I have to go to the troll or tauren district just to get up over 20.
And my "top-of-the-line" laptop puts out an amazing 3 fps in Vortex Pinnicle. Every. Singe. Pull.

As an expatriate of a low-pop to a high-pop, I will say that there is a quiet to low-pop and a scarcity that is nice. Of course you still have acres of /trade spam, and dozens of farmer competing with you, but there are truly quiet areas (Silvermoon City is a great example).
However for raiding, low-pop is complete death. Even in a great guild there will be attrition over time, your core group will fray a bit. Replacing them with new faces is daunting-to-impossible.
So if you raid, and raid seriously, be VERY wary of low-pop. Otherwise, it can be nice.

I have played on Eredar since I began the game. When it was a low population server, it was nightmarish to recruit for anything or to even pug anything. The AH prices were ridiculously inflated and there were only a few raid groups every night. However, as Eredar grew into a medium population server I found a happy balance there.
I also play on Kil'Jaeden, which at the expansion release was one of the biggest US servers, with a constant 2000 person queue in the afternoon and evening. It wasn't fun, but at least the AH has everything and there are guilds recruiting everywhere. So pros and cons I suppose.
All that said, I definitely prefer my current server in it's medium state.

I'm an ardent capitalist, so it's high population servers all the way for me. Or at least, that's what I
prefer
; right now, I'm in a medium-population server because that's where all my high-level characters are.

High pop == more d-bags/trolls, in my experience. Oh, and queues suck. So I'm very content with low/medium.
But I agree with previous posters, running a raid guild on a low-pop requires a significant and directed effort to build and maintain talent, and there is no guarantee that it will be sustainable long-term. So if your goal is raiding, you should probably stick to well-traveled realms.

Low population servers got large gnome communities <3.

Finding arena partners on medium and low pop servers is nearly impossible.
