Right now I'm levelling a rogue; I'm about level 40.
I'm Subtlety for soloing, mostly because I love using Shadowstep and Ambush to oneshot things. The problem is, I'm struggling in dungeons no matter which spec I choose. Subtlety is a pain because my DPS plummets once Master of Subtlety drops off; Assassination doesn't really work at lower levels because I don't have all the abilities I need for it (or at least looking at guides I don't); and Combat... I've been playing around with Combat and it doesn't feel like I'm doing it right.
What's the preferred spec for dungeons at a relatively low level?

Assassination or Combat.

Combat for cleaving stuff
Assassination for single target stuff.

Levelling a rogue atm via instance system, currently level 59.
Have tried Assas and Combat, Combat came out trumps, even single target.
Assas doesn't shine until you get envenom imo (54) and even then combat is miles ahead on single target fights because of Adrenaline Rush (49).
As for "doing it right" its real simple as combat.
- SS into a 3-4 CP SnD is you opening sequence (keep SnD up for the whole fight)
From there you use SS to build CP's into Eviscerate's (Rupture only if it will tick for the whole duration)
Revealing strike should be used (only) when you are at 4 CP's and plan to use eviscerate/rupture next.
Bladeflurry on always when there is more than one mob - and glyph this as your 1st major (SS then AD should be your Prime's)
To give you a quick (anecdotal) idea of the DPS difference, I was doing 350 DPS as Assas, and over 500 as Combat over the course of 4-5 instances.
Once you get Adrenaline Rush you will see massive single target DPS (1.2K single target in BRD earlier today!)
This is ofc purely whilst leveling, combat puts much more damage out upfront and though 'reliant' on CD's for the burst, its perfectly suited to instances where you can save those CD's for bosses, and cleave through trash packs inbetween.
Happy levelling!

Already said this on another topic:
You have to learn to play every spec by your own and choose which one suits better for you, what other people think -may be correct or not- won't help you at all. People who are sublety lovers will say sublety is awesome because it 1-shots mobs. Others may say combat, because of the lack of need to restealth makes it easier and faster, especially on random dungeon finder. I leveled as assassination and the talent
Deadly Momentum
nailed it, imho. I could have SnD and Rec. on me always before engaging a new mob, that's probably why I was good in dungeons and stuff.
The only good advice I can give you, and I don't even know if it's worth it, it's that whichever spec you choose, stick to that spec so you can truly understand it completely.

No offense to anyone doing heroics at 85...but 2 k is horrid. Thats healer dps....even if they get that low. Even as sub i pull 8k on most trash mobs because by the time im done dpsing one, and i move to another, i have to ramp up all over again. On most boss fights 10k is my LOWEST...17k is my highest. i can nearly pull 20 in vortex pin...
But back on topic. Just play what you LIKE to play. You will always try harder when either A.) You are under pressure, or B.) You love what you are doing. I play sub, and i pull my weight, may not be the top on dps meters, or can even beat another spec (though mainly assassination, ive beaten combat for the most part so far on long single target boss fights) *shrug* until you hit 85, play whats comfy and you enjoy...its a game after all.
edit for spacebar not workin

Doing dungeons as Sub isnt that hard. You will be bursting hard in the beginning then your dps will drop off. Save your vanish for bosses unless you know you wont be to a boss in awhile. Double ambushes. Other than that just backstab. Make sure the first thing you get up is Recoup if you have it talented (and you are a bad rogue if you dont). Then SnD. Hemo is nice for bosses but i find it useless for self dps if you are a meter freak on trash. I actually think its useless unless glyphed, on a boss and with a full rupture going.
So stay in stealth long as possible.
Ambush
Recoup
backstab till the mob is dead. Hit Recoup if its about off or SnD if you have plenty of time on it then backstab the next target.
I know backstab takes a lot of energy until later in the tree but it hits REALLY hard. If you got them off any faster then tank wouldnt be able to hold agro off you.
Also use double insta poisons.

Prolly wanna use double wound if you are gonna do that, and switch to instant/deadly on bosses. Slice and dice isnt really all that useful in trash pulls to be perfectly honest, its nice but not really all that necessary, you could get by on using other finishers like evisc or even rupture, then just switch targets and ramp up again. DPS on trash isnt really all that important unless you are raiding where they can possibly kill you. (its happened)
For boss fights the first thing you want up after you premed and ambush is rupture, to get the MoS buffed rupture. After that hit hemorage once to further buff it and to put another extra damage on them (saying you took the glyph for the hemo bleed) At this point you stop and let your energy pool a little. Then ShadowDance. At your first ambush you should have 5 combos, so hit slic and dice, ambush again and you can refresh recup with a 4 pointer, you have time for one more ambush before ShD drops off, then hit hemo to refresh then evisc to refresh rupture.
First thing about sub. Its complicated, most go to the others because they are a little more straightforward and don't require you to give every waking moment to your priorities. But, it can be done. Sub can pull good dps, anywhere really, but the main thing that gets it in raids that with ramp up time and the fact you HAVE to be behind your target (raids will NOT always let you be there) in order to dps. So for sub pve....practice practice practice. There is a guide now for sub pve and it seems to be working well. *granted i totally went against the glyphs they used but no one has complained to me yet*
*sigh* Well that was long winded...i wonder if i missed anything...
