My (mother's) family is hardly religious apart from a select few and one that has actually has done a pilgrimage is called a Hoca.
I've been asking alot of questions for the past week or so, and most of the time she has little idea of what to say and goes off on little tangents. About not eating pork she admitted not understanding why it would be other than 'Allah said so', the reasons she learnt was that pork is bad for you (which as far as I know is not), that the eat their own feces which makes them disgusting animals (which apparently they do not do and if they do then I hear that other animals do that aswell and yet they are safe to eat) and that they breed with anyone, including their own mothers / brothers / sisters (when my uncle is breeding his dog with her brother).
I also never understood the no eating pork rule also.
You never knew why it exists at all, or you never understood the belief that led to the "you shall not eat pork" rule?

No. You may try to convert them, but in the end it's their own choice to let themselves be converted.

Is it wrong to 'convert' my family into Athiests?Definitely not.
Be prepared to get shunned, though, if they realize that's what you're trying to do. My parents threatened to kick me out of the house if I even mentioned the possibility of God not existing to my siblings.

That's pretty harsh. But heh, I shouldn't expect different with the things you've already said about them.

They've just been utterly consumed by dogma. Mainly Judeo-Christian dogma for my mom, and mainly Republican Conservative dogma for my dad.

I think that, if they don't want to listen, you shouldn't press it on them. It will not only
A: Taint their view of you, it will
B: Make you look like an @#$%^&*.

Makes me happy for growing up in a family where we could believe in whatever we wanted. (even though my parents we're Jehova's witnesses, they asked me if I wanted to go to church and I said no. Good thing I had parents that wouldn't care what I believed.
OT: Atheism for now. If not something very, VERY unlikely happens (which I HIGHLY doubt).

Jehova's Witnesses AND let you choose your own faith? Now that's something extraordinary.

I always figured the rule was simply a hold-over from Judaism, where swine was considered an "unclean" animal (most likely because of trichinosis infections from undercooked meat).

You have to realize that these rules were created in the Middle East, and pork can easily spoil in the desert sun, especially considering there was no way to refrigerate anything. Similarly, Shellfish would give you the runs. I learned that the hard way this weekend. It's mostly health regulations backed up with religious cause.

Oh, I know. That's why I mentioned the trichinosis. It may have been a divine mandate - but it also was a sensible health precaution for the time and region.

Taoism is older that christianity :)
I was raised non-religious but was taught to be open to religious belief and was told that I needed to educate myself so that I could make my own decision in the matter when I was ready. I found the strictures of the major western religions to be something that I had no interest in, so I looked for something more abstract and spiritual that I could find my own way within, and that's how I found Taoism.
This book was
one of the first introductions I had :)
