People can die from the withdrawal symptoms in extreme cases.
Certainly there was a time (December 2008 - April 2009) where I went on a massive drinking binge. No more than 7 days off in the entire period. I was at the point where I had to have 6 schooners (9 standard drinks) before I'd even realised I'd had a drink. And I wore that extreme level of tolerance as a badge of honour.
When I realised what I was doing was going to catch up to me, physically, mentally and financially, I decided to have a month off. Within 3 days I was shaking and having cold sweats. I didn't last a week, although I've certainly never resumed the same extreme level of drinking.
I almost always drink socially though. I can never have more than 3-4 drinks by myself.

You
can
become addicted, but I think you pretty much have to drink to get drunk for it get there.

Oh, and every day I for about a month in the spring and fall, I take loratadine (Claritin) because I'm addicted to breathing.

Kudos to you for quitting, Donny!
Yeah, drinking socially and drinking "for the hell of it" are two absolutely different things if you ask me.

Kudos to you for quitting, Donny! I still drink heavily. Just not
that
heavily. I ♥ alcohol and always will.
Yeah, drinking socially and drinking "for the hell of it" is two absolutely different things if you ask me. Not to me or most of my mates. That's what the avatar is about.

This is the part I was thinking about, mostly, i can see how getting drunk with your mates is one thing, but you don't get drunk at home when you're alone just to be drunk, do you?

Sure, but as long as you don't get massive shakes and cold sweats after a few days without it, I'll consider it half-harmless.

No. I drink beers to enjoy the taste, have something to wash down my dinner, and relax after work. I stop after 2-4.

No, I can definitely go without it now and feel fine. Once I have the first when with friends, the fiendish behaviour kicks in and I go nuts. But it's situational.

Caffeine is a drug. It's just not (particularly) habit-forming.
It's a psychoactive stimulant, apparently.

I just wanted to mention OxyContin and Codeine are not OTC here in America, they are narcotics and you have to have a prescription to obtain them, and even then if the Pharmacist thinks youre just going to abuse them they can deny your prescription. As someone who went to Pharmacy school and currently works in a major hospital all I do now is smoke a little bit of weed every now and then, I have done alot more though. Its pretty common to see hospital staff (especially nurses) addicted to various pills, mostly pain killers. I will do dispense some meds at a station only to find a bunch of Vic or percs missing heh. Or a nurse will simply slip the patient regular aspirin and keep the pain killers, lots of screwed up stuff happens in hospitals if you work for one.
