Saw Django Unchained last night (hadn't gotten around to watching it sooner). Pretty good, I especially liked Schultz as a character, plus DiCaprio was awesome at playing the bad guy.
8/10

Saw Now You See me last week, going to see it again this Friday.
It was a really fun movie. Not the greatest I've ever seen, but it was worth more than Rotten Tomatoes gives it, imo. Either way, I enjoyed it and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Not sure how I feel about this...
I was apprehensive enough when I heard they were doing a sequel to 300. But after watching the trailer it seems like they're trying to make the Athenians as martial and warlike as the Spartans, which just doesn't fit as well.
At the very least it looks like a good action movie.

which just doesn't fit as well.
Not sure why, at that time in history the Athenians could wage war just as well as anyone. It wasn't until after the war with the Persians that they actually focused more on intellectual ideals.

Actually Athens didn't become a superpower until after the Persian war. And even in the years leading up to the Peloponnesian war Athens was a naval power, Sparta was a military power.
But my point was more that Sparta was a militaristic society, Athens was not. Making Athenian soldiers on the same tier, as individual warriors, as the Spartans doesn't fit as well.
And for the record the Greeks, particularly the Athenians focused more on intellectual pursuits than the rest of the ancient worlds. It's true the advent of philosophy didn't start up until after the Persian war, but that doesn't mean Athens wasn't focusing on intellectual ideals.
And the Battle of Salamis, which is featured in this movie, was a victory won by strategy, not superior martial prowess, which we saw in the Battle or Thermopylae. Also the Greek ships were better suited for ramming.

It looks marginally less terrible than the original, and Lena Headey's in it, so I guess I'll have to watch it. :P

300 was, for lack of a better term, one of the manliest movies ever made, which is saying a lot considering it was about a bunch of guys wearing speedos. And this was part of the charm of the original movie, this was why a lot of people liked it.
My problem with the sequel is that it seems they are trying to recapture the same feeling of the original, which is a trap so many franchises fall into. Themistocles was a politician, a strategist, and an admiral. Trying to make him as 'macho' as Leonidas and the Athenians the same super soldiers that the Spartans were is dishonest to the character.
Perhaps not as much so as making Xerxes a giant leading an army of freaks, but still... Lena Headey's in it, so I guess I'll have to watch it. :P
At least she's getting a paycheck her money grubbing ex can't get his mits on now...

You know that name, "Rise of an Empire" is kind of ironic. It was Athenian imperialism that instigated the Peloponnesian War with Sparta, which tore Greece apart and led to their eventual conquest by the Macedonians and then later the Romans.

Was anyone else incredibly disappointed in Man of Steel? I kind of hate Superman as a character because he seems so one-dimensional and flawless, but I was really excited because this movie looked like it'd play with him and Zod a bit more. It's not that they didn't try, but all of the characters felt so one dimensional and forced, the plot was pretty bad (and dialogue absolutely laughable). It was much longer than it needed to be (tons of repeated scenes of falling people being saved to the point of whenever the camera zoomed in on someone falling you'd expect to see Superman the next moment, not to mention flying through sky-scrapers). Bleh.
3-4/10. Very disappointing. Would not recommend.

Edit: My favorite was when the lieutenant was talking to Superman and she says "The difference between us is you have morality and we don't and that's an evolutionary advantage and evolution says the fittest survive." And I just facepalmed so hard that's not even a science nerd qualm like half of that movie was talking about species and then these two people of the same species are discussing their 'evolutionary' differences based on the fact that he was RAISED somewhere else like I just can't omg.

I haven't seen the movie, so they may have changed things, but in every other continuity Superman is an alien.... a completely different species from a completely different evolutionary tract.

And he always get's his morality from whoever raises him; be it the Kents, the Russian Government, the Amish etc etc etc.
That being said; just like pretty much every Superman movie(that's not from the DCAU), people are split on whether it's horrible or awesome. I haven't seen it yet either, but after reading reviews and the like, I don't think I will enjoy it(since it leans way too much towards the Nolan side of things).

Actually Nolan made a number of concessions to Snyder in the film, most notably Superman killing ZoddI don't know how the Hell Christopher Nolan is taking directions from Zack Snyder of all people. Don't get me wrong, Snyder has his charm, but Nolan is a genius, not to mention Hollywood's golden boy.

Well considering they took out the Phantom Zone aspect, the idea of Kryptonite and a few other standards of the Superman Universe..how else were they going to stop him?

I didn't say that I was against that necessarily. Although that is one of the big things a lot of fans took issue with. I haven't actually seen it yet, going to wait and see how it's handled before I make a judgment.

One good thing about a darker Superman franchise, is we might finally get to see a badass Lex Luthor on the big screen.

In Superman: Red Son he was raised in Stalin's time, but still ended up pretty compassionate and eager to help people (even if that nearly drove him crazy in the end).

That's true, the Superman in Red Son was still Superman in the beginning. He didn't start to go bad until he became the Russian President. That was more about the corruptive nature of power and authority than it was about the way he was raised.
