I read about the Norse myths long before I discovsred the Thor super-hero, and uh... It was kind of weird. I'll probably spend the whole movie yelling about inconsistencies with the original myths, not even the comic (THAT nerdy, oh yeah), but like it.
I sort of read about them, but this was about eight years ago when I was practically venerating Tolkien and saw the links to Norse mythology through characters like Gandalf, but didn't understand them. It's quite bad that my main source of Norse knowledge about Thor is WoW (Ulduar), but I know I'll probably end up rectifying that shortly. I know that in the mythos Sif was supposed to be romantically involved with Thor, and eventually killed by Loki, but that was one of the only differences that I spotted. That might be due to my lack of knowledge, but I think that you're never going to get a 100% accurate film adaptation of anything, let alone mythology, so there's no point crying over spilt milk, so to speak.
Edit:
Um....Green Lantern is DC lol. Same difference. ;)
And I think the Capt America movie is going to end up being the actual Avenger movie before it's over, since all of the new ones, from Spider-man to X Men to the Fantastic Four are based more on the Ultimate Universe instead of the main stream one; the Ultimates was formed once Capt was found......and the Banner threat was created heh.
And while I love GL....I have a really bad feeling I won't be able to get over Ryan Reynolds as Hal and may end up souring the movie for myself.Ryan Reynolds isn't terrible, I didn't like him as Deadpool (that's the only role I remember him playing), but I think that was more because of the script and plot of
Wolverine
. Again, I don't know much about Deadpool, but what I've read suggests he basically rips apart the fourth wall and screams "90s anti-hero!" which sounds more interesting than "Evil mute".

Finally saw
Golden Compass
. It was good, but a little confusing and the end was unsatisfying. The steampunk elements and the like were amazing, and the graphics were excellent.

Eh, really not a fan of him in general though; while Hal is a happy go lucky guy, he's also serious and Reynolds....I don't think he'll pull it off very well.
Really good example of Deadpool
....even if the rest of the movie isn't super awesome lol.

I don't know if I liked that or not, in all honesty. I've not watched it for a couple of years, but I remember also disliking the ending. :P Can't remember
why
, specifically, which is a bit of a shame. Ah well.

Probably because they were talking about how they were going to save Lord Asriel and they were also talking about how if he discovers a way to get to other worlds, the Magistereum can take over the universe, then it cuts to them flying off in a zeppelin, and that's the end =P

No worse then the first LotR movie; but the same thing, since the Golden Compass is book one of three heh.

But Reynolds might just surprise you, and I think the best thing to try and do is go in with as few pre-dispositions as possible. Usually, it makes a somewhat tolerable film absolutely painful to watch.

I lol'd when his arm got chopped off. I'm a bad person.

Problem is they aren't making any sequels for
The Golden Compas
s, and the ending of
Fellowship of the Ring
wasn't quite so abrupt.
Which is a real shame too, because the books are really good.

...On top of that, there's the fact that LotR essentially codified the last ten years of historical/medieval sort of style (as in, with a lack of advanced technology) of combat in cinematics. The Golden Compass didn't bring a great deal of new material to the cinema, in comparison, or arguably at all.

I lol'd when his arm got chopped off. I'm a bad person. And not when the Hulk squished him at the end....which still wouldn't have killed him lol.

I heard quite a few people go, at the end of the first LotR movie: That's it? What happens next? in the actual theater. And to be fair, the Fellowship ended on a 'weak' point. Had the Golden Compass not bombed like it did, the sequels would probably be made.../sigh Oh well, maybe some animated company will pick it up and we can watch as the Angels go insane and try to wipe out everyone...and watch as the Old Man just falls into the abyss.

To each their own. My screening ended with thunderous applause =P

I didn't have an opinion on anything else you said.

Well you said the abrupt ending of the Golden Compass was just sudden...but the same thing happens at the end of the Fellowship with Sam and Frodo standing on top of a cliff, looking down as they start their 900 page walk to the volcano.

Aye, but it still wasn't as abrupt as
The Golden Compass
.

Though....guess we should be happy they won't make a movie based on the third book; a lot of it would be cut/edited/heavily heavily heavily censored or changed....from the squickiness between the Earth child and the main female protaganist(oh joy, a 14 and 16 year old discovering their hormones and have really really really awkward scenes), to the whole 'Oh my god, they just killed God!' thing......
I mean, Leon the Professional is one of my favorite movies, but watching a 10-11 year old Natalie Portman acting like a little Lolita still squicks me out....and yet, that is one of her best performances.

Just watched Thor. It was a bit of a wash. The story was pretty shallow and predictable. I'm betting the studios were banking on the fact that it has better than average CG and 3D
But...it's a comic book movie about the origins of Marvel's Thor....what was it suppose to be lol?
