Fluttershion :O
And my nightmares now know their subject for tonight....

I think this was the best episode since Canterlot Wedding.
Fluttershy was absolutely adorable. And Trixie was just the right amount of sinister. And then Zecora! Zecora made a return!
When she said "Use the Six," I was really hoping for them to use the Elements of Harmony, but I'm still glad the way it turned out.
Oh! And Rule 63! And they said "Alicorn" for the first time! And Parasprite! Continuity! So much continuity this episode (Parasprites, Baby Cakes, Zecora, Trixie, Magic Snowball, Rock Farm, etc.)
AND THEN TWILIGHT WALKED OUT THROUGH THE FOURTH WALL WITH PINKIE!

SO AWESOME! Definately up there as one of the best!
When I was searching for the episode and saw all the red magc I was thinking there would be a king Sombra refference. There wasn't directly, but the amulet was brilliant!
I really can't elaborate on anything more than Skree said, but the running Pinkie Pie gag was AWESOME!

You know one of the theories I've heard was that the Alicorn (Canon name yay!) Amulet was made by a unicorn who aspired to the power of an Alicorn. My Headcanon is that that unicorn was Sombra.
Also, I just want to say, I absolutely loved Zecora in this episode. I like how they've sort of molded her into the really wise person the ponies can go to when they need help. One of the initial complaints when the show first came out was why didn't it have any black people in it, and I can kinda understand that one, but now Zecora is one of the most loved characters.

Ok the things I loved about this episode:
1) Trixie generally being a boss.
2) Star Wars reference when Zecora was training Twilight.
3) The cursor/trashcan gag with Pinkie Pie.
4) The Great and Apologetic Trixie line.

I'm not really a big fan of that theory, just because I thought Trixie was an awesome villain here, and Sombra was generally kind of a !@#$ty villain who I would like to forget existed. I'd rather not mix the two in any way shape or form.

He didn't have a lot of characterization (beyond being evil and cruel), but he acted as a looming threat to add tension to the protagonist's quest.

I actually didn't have a problem with Sombra's lack of motives, it was more his general characteristics. He was billed as this big looming threat, but I didn't feel it, the first time around he got
killed
turned into mist by the one big kamehameha from Luna and Celestia, and now the second time around he's just project for Celestia's favorite student.

Eh, I just liked that he was a villain that was actually kinda sinister. Nightmare Moon was laughable; Discord was just a huge troll; Chrysalis was actually pretty scary at first, but not really super sinister after her confrontation with Celestia.
Sombra was the first once that I actually thought seemed really, truly evil and cruel, and also the first one to actually get whacked.
I felt after Nightmare Moon and Chrysalis being somewhat sympathetic and Discord just being Chaotic Neutral, a really dark villain was a refreshing change, even if he wasn't all that potent in the end.

Yea that's a fair point. If they actually went into his backstory a bit I might like him better, it's kind of hard to get a read on him.

I'm convinced we'll be having a few more lead-up episodes featuring hints at him untill the finale, like Season 1's Gala episodes. Magic Duel was the first of these, and I can't wait to see the next!

I kind of doubt that, unless he gets some kind of a power up or something. He got pimp slapped down by the Alicorns once already, the final baddie of the season has to be made of tougher stuff than that.
And I think people are reading into the Alicorns amulet too much. I don't think it's going to be part of some larger plot. More likely I think they just wanted to bring Trixie back, and chose some generic power up trinket to make her a threat.

I liked this episode, but did anyone else notice at the beginning, when trixie's shadow looms over the alicorn's pendant in the display case, you can see her
smile
in her
shadow
. WHAT DA FURK?
That bothred me at first, but then I thought "well, maybe it's the light reflecting off of her great and powerful teeth?"

If there was ever a point we got to see Luna's transformation into Nightmare Moon,
this here video would be it
. And that's the long and the short of that.

So I'm thinking maybe the reason that we didn't get to see Sombra's motives was because they were planning on killing him off. If his backstory or motives were revealed, or if he, you know, talked... Then it would make him relatable and it would be that much darker to see him killed off on a kids show. When he was portrayed as just a force of nature it was just like watching Superman rip a robot apart on the old cartoon show.
