Necroed Threads Being Closed Down

Why does an old thread get closed down after a necro? I mean if its something people actualy want to discuss it seems like it should remain up, and if its not it will dissapear to the second page anyway.
I mean ive seen threads get closed down if theres another thread where people already discussed the same matter, so it seems like once a thread is made once and makes to to page two it can never be discussed again. Now obviously that last part is only trye in some cases, but I still dont see the big deal in a thread being brought back if somone finds a topic a year or two old that can still be discussed by people here now who werent back then, and i certinly dont think threads like this should be locked.

This would probably fit better in Wowhead Feedback.
It would be quite ironic if this thread was locked.

Because generally (that being the key word), old threads are no longer of interest. When a discussion ends, most people will keep checking back for a few days, but if there are no new posts, the circumstances will be forgotten and arguments lost etc. And when people forget them, they won't check back. So generally, old threads are useless because the people fueling the discussion haven't checked back, so the discussion is kind of not even a discussion anymore.
Also, I believe it's fine if new threads are brought back if there's actually people interested in discussing the matter. If one person decides to necro a thread(that is, if the necro-comment is a troll or of little use to the discussion) and another person comes by just to say "LOL IDIOT DONT NECRO", there is really no point in leaving the thread open. If the discussion however
does
resume, it won't be locked.
I believe that there has been cases, too, where a thread has been unlocked for a discussion to continiue. Don't quote me on it though.
I think the system is fine as it is.

Done. Sadly, I can't lock it for being a necro though :P
Jokes aside, I can see what the problem here might be. Sometimes we might act a bit fast, sometimes it's very much needed, even though the reason and problem isn't the fact that the thread was necro'ed, but more that the way it was done was either completely useless or the subject had simply been discussed throughout.
As per the , the following is stated:
Posting in an old thread, or "necro-ing," is a mixed bag. We understand that there's relevant information in a post even several patches later and we don't want you to make duplicate threads on the same topic. However, in the event that the necro doesn't contribute to the community, it will be locked and a warning will be issued. Making a new thread is encouraged if the thread you wish to reply to contains outdated information or is extremely old (e.g. from last year or older).
It has always been kind of a gray area, as it also varies a lot on what forum it was done in (for instance, class forums are usually the worst place, as these are one of the things changed the most often). The last time I recall it was up was
here, when Malgayne fed me to the Kraken
.
Otherwise, feel free to report a thread (the necro'ed post specifically), if you think it should be unlocked, in case that I - or one of the other moderators - was a bit too quick to act. It's not like it can't be undone. :)

I never agreed that "don't post in threads older than X, instead make a new thread" because if it's on topic, even if it's late it does not mean it's irrelevant, thus I support necroing more than making new threads for the same thing. Think of it this way, if you have a forum that is 10 years old and you search for "malygos strategy" and you find >100 threads with various malygos discussion -it's easier to combine most of these by allowing necroing and perhaps end up with 20 threads, much easier to look trough. :)

I've never seen a thread locked that was necroed well and for a good reason. It's only the ones where someone finds it via a google search, then posts without looking at the date and people respond without realizing that it was necroed. Those get locked.

Me too =) I've been campaigning for more tolerance towards necros for a long time!
As for the OP, can you link examples please?(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Koper##DELIM##

My own negative interaction with necro-bumped threads has been on class forums when the thread bumped to the front page gives some information that is way out of date.
Things like a thread that asks "what's the hit cap" with the answer "you need 202 hit rating for raids" that's followed up by lots of agreement from others.
The chances are just too great that someone would come along and also wonder what the hit cap is and only read as far as the first answer, never looking at the dates.
I'm personally not so worried about things being irrelevant, just misleading.

Koper, are you stalking me? I think you've quoted me most compared to others that quoted me. :P
