My wow directory's size is 32 gb. When i look in the folder, i see a lot of update files like "WoW-3.3.0.10958-4.0.0.12911-EU-Stage-2" or "WoW-3.3.0.11159-to-3.3.2.11403-enGB-patch". Can't i just erase these? I think the client only uses the Data folder and MPQs.(##RESPBREAK##)140##DELIM##MasterOfDisguise##DELIM##Please do post in all bold. You're a quick one, MoD.
Anyways, you could try deleting it and downloading the client from the website, might cut down on some data.

What you can
safely
delete to clear up space in your World of Warcraft directory:
Cache folder
Data\Cache folder
Updates folder
Patch files (the files you mentioned above)
You can also free up space by removing/moving your Screenshots directory, and by removing any unneeded Interface addons.
Alternately, a Blizzard poster provides us with a
handy list
of what you should
not
delete!
He does also point out, however, that many of the files deleted will rebuild themselves over time and this will affect your in-game performance - so the choice is yours!
A clean Cataclysm install with an already-built cache folder is around 25 GB. If you delete those data\cache folders, your next few loading screens will be very slow and the game will rebuild those files back to its current size. There's no point in getting rid of those.
You can delete the Cache folder found inside the World of Warcraft folder if you want to but the game will rebuild those as well.
I'm running WoW off a 160GB SSD that's desperate for space, and by deleting all of the above files I was able to bring my WoW directory down to 14.8GB, though keep in mind this is technically only a temporary solution as many files will always eventually rebuild themselves. Hope that helps!(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Miyari##DELIM##

Patch-1.0.0.0-to-1.0.0.1.exe weighing in at 4 gigabytes will most likely not be downloaded again...
I've installed the Battle Chest and updated from there in the past and had more than 8 GB in patches and updates. I've deleted those a bit after 4.0.3a went live, and to date they have not been redownloaded ;)
