Atonement was bugged at one point and incorrectly healed everything in range rather than just one target. This has long since been fixed.
The video you linked is from the Cataclysm beta, there is probably a lot of outdated information there.

Yes, disc is a good spec. No, "healing with smite" is not all that the spec is about. If you want to find out more about it,
here
is a good place to start.

Its...decent imho. To be really effective, smite healing scales best from heavy haste sets, and is well suited for 5 man content. The RNG target factor makes it unreliable for tank healing, and if you are raid healing, you won't be casting smite much, even if specced A/A, relying on PoH, penance and Gheals primarily.
A/A's problem is that it tends to cause tunnel vision, and requires the player to keep their Eva stacks up, smite when apropriate, but also be able to reaquire targets and cast proper heals. Its a great spec when played well, but it is niche at best among raid groups. Also, itemization becomes sometihng of a concern, as the heavy haste required for smite heal throughput places your PW:S and Aegis absorbs at a disadvantage, doubly limiting your flexibility when you really need it.
I run with two sets for my A/A spec, one with heavy haste (with a lot of gear from my shadow set) for fights with stacking mechanics and such that promote heavy smite usage (or have great +dmg modifiers on the boss such as Halfus or Arcanotrons pool). The second set is more balanced, having much more mastery, typicly used increase PoH throughput via the Aegis bonus, and increase your PW:S for tank/spike dmg support.
A/A is a bit of a knifes edge, not ideal in most situations, but in terms of flavor and added utility, its a lot more powerful than many players give it credit for. It's problem is that smite healing is a PIECE of your healing toolbox, and far too many A/A priests play it as a one button healing spec.

I have a
spriest
and have been trying to figure out the best OS for healing a raid that would allow me to reuse as most gear as possible.
I tried smite healing for one attempt on Omnitron but I had never even healed a 5 man with it so I was learning on the fly and I felt very limited by it. But this was probably due to lack of experience.
I currently hold a holy OS and seems like it flows nicely similar to my Resto Shaman main.
But I am still drawn to the uniqueness that is Disc with all its bubble mechanics.
So as I read here, you are saying that raid healing as disc, I shouldn't really be spec'd into AA?

I thought smite healing was just to give priests something more fun to do while leveling up in dungeons. Does smite healing actually have a place in current Cata raids?

Smite healing has it's place (can anyone say "Halfus") but for general healing I'd avoid it.

Bubble spam isnt my thing, its boring.
I use smite to keep tanks up on low damage phases, dont need haste for that. Im tank healing, melee shouldt take much damage, there for ur smites goes to the tank for 90% of the casts.
Holy fire crits avarage is around 23k average, its a very fast heal, it hits for normal around 13k, smite hits for average 12k crits up to 21k on averge for me. It Heals more than Heal does its faster than Heal and Holy Fire is a nice FH like heal. Its efficient healing, and as healer is nice to see +115k crits on Halfus HM (4 drakes debuff).
Only on Chimaeron its not usefull to smite for tank healing.
Once phase 2 hits, i smite again but there's no healing done in phase 2. Cept for the 900 heal per cast. Than again, if one melee dps is below 10k due to circumstances, a few cast can tip him over 10k so he/she can survive 1 hit.
Smite healing is viable, u just got to love it or hate it in order to take the skills or not. I enjoy it alot, its a nice spec and with all the healing tools we already have as priest, its adds even more diversity. Compared to the Bubble spam fest WotLK was.

Smite healing is not at all only limited to tankhealing. (Speaking from a 10man PoV). It's not like you will never find time to stack up evangelism if raidhealing. I run with a A/AA build, doing hardmodes, mainly raidhealing, and it works great. It should be said though, that I dont smite heal mainly for the heal itself, but it's a great tool during medium damage phases, and for stacking up Evangelism. As several people have stated, it's one of the many tools a disc priest has, and is in no way our main heal, but it is not useless by a long shot.
