In recent LulzSec news, they're getting hit pretty hard by a "grey-hat" hacker that goes by the name The Jester after they hit cia.gov. While I didn't particularly mind what LulzSec did (especially against Sony), I also don't mind someone else attacking them for not having a compass.
Oh dear, they attacked CIA "for the lulz"? That's a rather bad move.
I do enjoy watching these hacking groups duking it out against each other over the Internet and leaving notes and flaming twitter-posts just because they can. However, commiting hacks that negatively affect the public (Anonymous attack on Sony and the theft of thousands of credit card numbers comes to mind) is a no-go and quite silly.

There's a really interesting drama going on between these guys.
Jester's blog:

Jester's twitter:

LulzSec twitter:
http://twitter.com/lulzsec
I guess the Jester brings down jihadi websites, and whenever he does he says "TANGO DOWN" on twitter (examples all over the twitter page above). When LulzSec brought down cia.gov yesterday, they tweeted this:
Tango down -
http://t.co/2QGXy6f
- for the lulz.
Clearly a taunt directed at the Jester. His blog post today describes his ongoing reaction (an absolutely fascinating read), and he posted the following ominous tweets this morning:
@lulzsec - re: your last hit. Gloves off. Expect me. My silence is not an indication of weakness, as your mouth is an indication of yours.
@lulzsec - no comforting words from this point on. My silence previous, and forthcoming, is the anti-you.

@Heckler: This is actually pretty awesome. *grabs some virtual popcorn* I wonder if there's anyone out there blogging a blow-by-blow, because this is gonna be good.

I know next to nothing about this Jester guy, but I already like him.

He took wikileaks offline for a period of time, so I have a hard time believing he's really fighting for ideals... he's just the government's lap dog.

Nothing more than speculation, of course, but I'd think he does it for the kicks, just like LulzSec, but in a more serious manner. Or maybe he just has something against them and thinks they're behaving stupidly (and rightly so...).

Comparison to WoW aside - it isn't that they "should" necessarily. I don't think I've said that. I said that they're going to and a company would be incredibly petty for suing them over it. Again, where modded consoles and piracy are concerned, it's much smaller in scale than music / software piracy on PCs, which at this point, is just included when they figure potential profits.
When you make a claim on your insurance if your car gets trashed by someone, the insurance company pays you, and then goes after and sues the guy who did it.
You've said that a company would be petty for suing an individual who pirates. Why? What's petty about it? Would an insurance company be petty for suing an individual? Would a bank who forecloses on a house be petty? What makes a software or music company petty, then?
Game manufacturers figure that some people are going to pirate. Insurance companies figure that they're not going to be able to recover all of the money that they pay out in claims. By your logic, since the guys who try to flee are included, then the insurance company shouldn't sue them, amiright? And likewise, the banks know that they're going to lose some money when they lend to people, so they'd be
petty
for sueing folks who default on their home loans and credit cards, sure.

@Squish: I think it would be better if you just accepted that chaos is some kind of a naive software communist, and left it alone.

He isn't on their payroll, but he furthers the government's agenda with everything he does. Taking out wikileaks is clear bull#$%^, attacking a website that supports transparency because the government alleges that some of that information could be detrimental is clear lap dog status.

If we accepted that everybody on the forums was a unique snowflake, it'd be a much more boring place :P

I agree with Chaos, Squish you are overblowing this far more than you had to. Your little analogy about the insurance claim and getting sued by them and whatnot isnt even right, what you said is completely false and doesnt happen that way.

I know you have downloaded a song from the internet before. Should you be sued for this? Put in prison? Sony does not need money, they could have simply told him to stop distributing the content and stopped there. Taking money from him was pointless and outrageous. I am not sure why you are making these crazy analogies, but I agree with Chaos on this one.

First things first, we're not talking about a car or insurance or a bank loan. We're talking about video games. Pure entertainment in a solely digital form.
Second, since when do insurance companies sue anyone when you get in a wreck? YOU can sue someone. The person who hit you's insurance will pay out the amount, their insurance will go up, and you'll just be bitter because your car still go $%^&ed up. There's no suing, unless they don't have insurance, which is illegal too. Banks loaning an individual hundreds of thousands of dollars for a house is on a bit of a different scale too. Even if I pirated every Xbox 360 game made, I'd barely be pushing the amount of the average house and there's a ton of really !@#$ty games that aren't worth the money they cost anyway.
Stop making terrible, overblown comparisons. I swear, you're making people who pirate anything sound like Nazis or something. It's nothing more than common theft and people need to stop making it out to be more than that. You wouldn't get sued for stealing a Playstation and some games physically from a store. You'd just spend a few days in jail and either pay for the stuff or return it.
My eyes are quite open, although squinted just a bit over how silly this is. I'm grown and I realize that the world has changed and is continuing to change. Companies need to be forced to create better products to earn our money rather than just remaking the same crap without improvement. How many versions of the Nintendo Gameboy / DS are there? How many of them are ACTUAL improvements on the previous model?
You clearly know nothing about car insurance then. If someone hits you and the other person is at fault, your insurance company will sue them if their insurance won't pay the full damage or they don't have insurance. One of the primary reasons for car insurance, other than the most basic form being required by the state, is that it relieves you of that burden of having to get the funds that are due to you. Instead of you having to sue, the insurance company can (and only they can, you give up your right to sue for damages to your vehicle or injuries while in the vehicle if applicable when you take on car insurance) sue on your behalf. Maybe you should take a course on basic risk management and insurance.
Anyways, you still haven't presented a valid argument (as none exists) why you should be able to steal a product. Stop trying to dodge around it, I know it, you know it (or you should know it), everyone here knows that you're just trying to justify an illegal and immoral activity.
