Okay, I'll admit to not being the best WoW player and I probably never will be but I would really like to work on my dps. I'm kinda tired of people ragging on me about it. Maybe I am just doing it all wrong so I'll tell you exactly what I do. - and so you know I am a Shadow Priest.
When I start a fight I use mind spike three times then use mind blast that way I get that big explosion crit. After that I put on my three DOTS (Vampiric Touch, Shadow Word Pain, Devouring Plague) and then I mind flay over and over. After awhile I repeat again with the mind spike and so on. I also use Shadow word:Death at the end when the boss is on low health. Am I doing this wrong? Also, do you have to button mash or something to get good dps? I really feel like I am going fast but is the key just to mash the crap outta your keyboard? I guess I've never gotten this dps thing down - time to learn!
Any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism would be great! Thanks

Okay. Well, there is now a Shadow Priest Guide here (see link in sig) that you can use for some of the issues you may be having.
The long and short of it is, basically it sounds like a rotational issue. From what I gather, you're using Mind Spike in the middle of a fight, which is not optimal at all. Mind Spike strips your DoTs off the target and thus you're losing a great deal of potential damage from keeping your DoTs rolling right there, plus if you are then reapplying all your DoTs you're wasting time spending GCDs that could be used elsewhere.
Mind Spike was generally created (if I remember correctly) for things like solo questing and short-lived adds. You'd never want to bring it into your rotation on a boss fight.
So, aside from removing that from your rotation, I'd suggest taking a look at the Guide to further flesh out your issues. Also, a link to your armory would be helpful in case there are any gearing or spec issues.

Death was top priority in execute stage, or so i thought.
Oh, and you do realize that Mind Spike wipes your dots from a target, which is the opposite of what you want happening, except in very specific cases, like Omnitron.

Dots applied before the shield goes up do not count towards breaking the shield.

Orly?
Though I think I may have unconsciously noticed that.

It still is to my knowledge, thats the opener I posted though.
Edit: Oh yea, Thats the priority before execute stage, SW:D moves up to the top I beleave in the execute stage
From the information I've read, SW:D is still behind an orb'd MB even at <25% but you're right, it does move up the list a bit.
