As long as you're not doing terrible dps as compared to the rest of the group anything is viable. That said, you might fare better if you tanked as prot instead. :-)

Prot dps is not viable.
You wont do much damage because of not being hit:
-you will lack rage
-you will have no vengeance
Dual spec is currently so cheap there is no excuse to not having one.

No. What Zakkhar. Again, no. Just don't do it. Either tank as Prot or DPS as Arms or Fury. You'll go a lot further and have a hell of a lot more fun.

Seeing as its sub-85, go for it if you think its fun and if your dps isnt too poor. However, you'd do more dps if you just tanked with it.

Haters gonna hate. I sometimes dps as prot and its viable. Its not as viable as either fury or arms, but not terrible, and youll do decent dps. I have done 14k in Baradin Hold 10 single target on old boss, without a single raid drop in my gear (havent raided since toc). In smf fury im just 6k over, and with 14k im far from being last (sad enough) so its viable even in substandard gear. Spam devastate and kill stuff, vigilance the tank and scream "This! is! Spartaaaa!" on vent every single time you shield slam.
Definitively doable in HCs too.
here is my prot dps set-up:

If you took the gear ilvl of a PvE tank that does 14k dps on a single target and switched it to dps gear and spec, they would be pulling between 21k and 26k dps if they know what they're doing. How can you call a ~40% drop in dps "viable?" Enough dps to not force enrage timer wipes is not what most people consider "viable."
