I thought the EJ article was pretty clear, but I guess not.
ETA: Redundant. I need to improve my reading comprehension. :P
** should have the answer to your question.
Anyway, Arcane fights are separated into 2 phases, Burst and Conserve. You should be able to Burst every 2 minute (Evocation and Mana Gem cooldown).
In Burst, you simply pop all your cooldowns and spam as much AB as possible*. This is, of course, a huge dps burst (hence the name), but is not sustainable. You goal here is to spam till about 30-35% mana, then pop Evocation to full, then go to Conserve phase.
In Conserve phase, we make use of our Mana Adept mastery and try to stay as close as possible to 100% mana as possible without wasting ticks of Mage Armor. This revolves casting a specific amount of Arcane Blast and clearing the stacks with either Arcane Missiles or Arcane Barrage. The amount of AB to cast will vary greatly depending on your gear, and your clearcasting procs. You will get better at estimating the number of AB you can afford to spend the more you play. You will do this until your cooldowns are up, and are ready to go to the Burst Phase.
That's the basic to playing , and you probably start off the fight by going into the Burst phase first. There are actually more things you can do to master the Spec, but this should be good enough to start you off.
*As a precursor to the burst phase, you actually want to stack AB to 4 to maximize the burst, and to use as enough mana so that the mana from popping mana gem wont be wasted.
** ignore the table until you've gotten familiar with the spec. It's basically a chart of the stacks to use during the conserve phase, and the dps and dpm tradeoff.

Arcane AOE, if you've taken
Improved Arcane Explosion
, will be to go into melee range, stack AB to 4 or a mob, and spam AE. Stop to refresh AB stack before it falls off. With the talent, you should not grab aggro, but there is still the threat of cleaves and close range AOEs.
If you haven't taken the talent, it might be safer to Flamestrike or Blizzard at a distance, but the damage from either of them would be abysmal.
Or you can do like me, and dual-spec Fire for heavy AOE fights.

I misread the part whe you said
The first part of the post (above the link) says to cast AB until you can fill up your mana bar with a mana gem and then go down till about 35% and cast evocation and start again. When evocation is on CD you save your mana by not straining AB. This is pretty clear.
... so I probably didn't have to repeat the whole thing :P
Fire IS slow, especially when RNG isn't being kind to you.

Exactly that part :)
Yes, I was expecting fire to be dynamic and quick... given the nature of fire :p
Well, I'll try it anyway, the only difference in gear is basically reforging... so definetely worth a try.
Crits throw gas on the fire, so to speak. Or maybe gunpowder...
It's quite the quick step when RNG works in your favor for the one fight of the night. heh
