I sees the Rugby League Thread and I thought It'd be cool to make one for the world cup as well.
So, I'll start by posting the pools and give some thoughts on it. This can be like a general discussion thread for it.
Pool A
Canada
France
New Zealand
Japan
Tonga
Pool B
Argentina
England
Scotland
Romania
Georgia
Pool C
Ireland
Australia
Italy
Russia
USA
Pool D
Fiji
Wales
Samoa
South Africa
Namibia
Personally I think Pool D is the one that's the most interesting, facinatingly enough most people won't remember that Wales didn't make it to the Quarter Finals in 07. Wales lost to both Fiji and Australia.
Add Samoa's recent upset victory against Australia and the current World Cup Champions you've got a pool filled with drama.
That's not to say the other pools won't be interesting, but I think it's safe enough to say who would go through there.
However, as a Springbok supporter I am terribly worried about their current situation. They are getting more injuries than replacements and unlike NZ and the Wallabies, lack top end depth as displayed in the recent Tri-Nations game. Should the Springboks lose one of their early games, I'll be biting my nails every second of every next match that they are in. I also think it's a fair assumption to make since we had a few close calls last World Cup.
The thing that might work to the Springboks advantage is still having a large amount of the key stars from the 07 World Cup, however if they are still in form is a totally different question.
Anyways, Pool A should be pretty straightforward. I don't see Tonga, Canada or Japan beating France or the All Blacks. So safe to assume they advance.
Pool B, I suppose Scotland could pull a surprise out of the bag, but I doubt it.
Pool C the only real contenders are Ireland and Australia, Wallabies are in a good spot I reckon.
Pool D already covered.
Rugby World Cup starts on 09/09/11

Technically, the other thread is League, whereas the RWC is Union, so it's fair to leave this as its own thread (for those active reporters).
Prediction for the finals: All Blacks v Wallabies.

Hahahaha. I've lost count of how many times I've had to distinguish between league and union for people.

Springboks surrender Tri-Nations hopes.
You know it's bad when your own coach says you can't win.
Looks like they're focusing on the Rugby World Cup now.
I honestly don't see them winning it, losing 40-7 to the AB's simply proves what I assumed in my OP.
Gonna be a hard next few weeks for the boks. I wish them the best.

They fielded a second-rate team, most of their premier players were apparently injured. Of course the AB's ran rings around them!
I don't blame Devilliers for trying to take care of his best players in order to perform at their peak in the W.C.

Well for those that might have missed it these are the results so far.
South Africa 17 - 16 Wales
Ireland 22 - 10 USA
Australia 32 - 6 Italy
Argentina 9 - 13 England
France 47 - 21 Japan
Fiji 49 - 25 Namibia
Scotland 34 - 24 Romania
New Zealand 41 - 10 Tonga
I must say though, I was very surprised by how tight some of these games were. Romania actually looked like they could beat Scotland, but they lacked the expertise to finish them off.
Seems to be a recurring trend though with Argentina and Wales dominating their opponents but still not quite getting there. Wales probably had some bad luck there as well with missing two kicks and the flags staying down for one that looked like it was over. In the end of the day though it's only the result that matters.
Worried about the kickers too lol, something like 11 miss kicks in the Argentina game. Luckily kicking is something you can fix before your next game.
Next games are on the 14th.
