Q&A thread for guide writers' layout questions

As a couple of people remarked, the announcement thread is getting a little cluttered with layout questions so I've made this thread as a temporary measure so people can ask questions specifically about layout and BBCode for the new Guides system.
The kinds of questions asked will help inform me when updating the BBCode thread or whoever else when writing an overview/FAQ at some point.
So, if you have any questions on Guide layout and the BBCodes required to make it happen post them here and we'll do our best to help.
@Thror, Indents are another thing that you can use tables to achieve with a slightly messy workaround.

So, the image uploader won't let me upload any images, can I just place one at the top of my guide instead? I couldn't see any BBCode for that in the thread.

You can link to off site images with:

Toggled so it doesn't take up a load of space:

I am going to repeat my comment from the "beta" announcement thread - it looks like I am going to be doing reading & approving for now (I like it and I have time for it), so I'll be posting comments to your guides on the actual guides' pages. When I have no more feedback to offer you, or when you decide that the guide is good enough as it is, I will delete those comments and approve it. Until then, feel free to reply to my comments (or email me at argent@wowhead.com) if we need to discuss anything.
This is a fantastic thread though, keep using it for assistance with things like markup/formatting help - asakawa can help you a lot with it, and if need be, we can drag alayton here too.

I think it's about done now, so I'm eagerly waiting for somebody to check it out. ^^

I actually just posted a comment (after I wrote the one here, but before I read yours).

Here, let me be useful for once :P
Nested Lists
ohhai, I am outside the list!
Now we are in bullet 1
Now we are in bullet 2
Aaand now we are in bullet 2.1
...and 2.2!
And back to the original list - bullet 3!
01. ohhai, I am outside the list!
02.
Now we are in bullet 1
Now we are in bullet 2
05.
06. Aaand now we are in bullet 2.1
...and 2.2!
09.
10. And back to the original list - bullet 3!
11.
Note that I've added line numbers. Here's the trick:
Lines 1 - 3 are standard. Open up the parent list and do one bullet.
Line 4 starts the second bullet of the parent list, but note that I don't close the \ tag. Instead, I drop it a little further down and insert my child list inside. 2's closing \
Lines 5-8 are my child list, nothing interesting to see here.
Line 9, I close the second bullet of the parent's list.
Proceed normally with lines 10+.
I am probably overdoing it big time with this explanation, but I like to sound smart :)
Tables and Line Breaks
The thing with tables is that they like to eat empty lines before and after them. To force an empty line, you can simply add \ before and after the table.

Regarding the nested lists, I've always typed them out by hand and they've invariably caused a moment or two of that "where was I?" feeling. It is possible, however, to do nested lists using the button(s) above the edit box.
1
Type out your main list items:
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4
line 5
2
Select it all with your mouse then click the list button
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4
line 5
3
I you wanted to add lines 2a, 2b, 2c you would add them before line 2's closing tag
\
line 1
line 2
line 2a
line 2b
ine 2c
line 3
line 4
line 5
4Now select the inserted lines and click the list button again
line 1
line 2
line 2a
line 2b
line 2c
line 3
line 4
line 5
giving you:
line 1
line 2
line 2a
line 2b
line 2c
line 3
line 4
line 5
Once you get used to this and used to planning out your lists before tagging them, it can actually be quicker than typing it by hand.

It is.
eg:
I would say though that videos, while excellent if used well, are something that is very likely to moderated out in the approval process if they're not entirely appropriate
and/or were not made by the author themselves
. If a guide writer makes an accompanying video then it could be a very powerful and useful addition. If it's just used for flavour or fun then it can be more distracting than useful.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

Don't do
autoplay=true
.

I'll remove that so people don't use it by default.

If they credit the video in the footnotes, it's fine. I mean, it's free traffic for a video maker and their video will usually say their info so I don't have a problem with it.
Now if it's just a bunch of videos and no text, yeah, that's not used as intended ;)

@Billets,
The float=, clear=, align= and even width= properties for \ are optional and when using one you don't need to give values for the others. If you're just using the align property then you can leave the rest blank. If you float it with a 100% width then things like \s that don't take up any actual width-space get lost completely.

The float=, clear= and align= properties for . What do they do? What's the difference between align and float?

I actually made a messy demonstration of Float vs. Align in the Hunter off topic thread recently.
==►
this \ is
floated
over here
-
-
-
-and this text over here is able to take up the same vertical space as it (and you can see the \ is as wide as the content.)
if I put some text in a right
aligned
\
-
-
-Then this text is forced to go under it rather than next to it and you can see that the \ takes up the full width
Essentially, floating an element defines where it goes on the page while aligning defines the actual alignment of the content
within
the element.

Is there a way to align images to the left/right with text in the same line?
Post by
asakawa
You mean like:
text text
text text
text text
text text
If you need finer control over things like vertical alignment then I'd be tempted to use tables:
text text
text text
Feel free to be more specific if I'm not hitting on your query.
