There are many tales about Goldshire’s past… a dark and easily forgotten past. Many tales are used to make children behave; stories of ghosts and spirits that wander the town in search of naughty children.
Some of those tales have more truth than others…
-
The man was a thief, it was what he did. He stole and stole. And, when he was done, he stole some more. His pride and joy was the amazing mustache and beard that took up the lower portion of his face; groomed to perfection. Combined with his eyes which seemed to smile as he spoke, one would be hard pressed to not trust him.
But the guard didn’t. The guard had watched the thief try to steal, and had caught him red handed. The man had worn his best suit to trial, but he had stood no chance.
And now the thief was sentenced to death by the rack. But not just that; this man was going to suffer. A priest had been called to keep him alive. Alive as he stretched out on the torture device and had his entire face removed.
His hair, beard, and mustache were cut off; his face carved away by an axe. The healing left it a pale, blank head. There were no features; the mean let out a muffled sound as he tried to scream and cry out in pain. His limbs stretched until the priest was too disgusted and stopped, allowing his to tear into pieces.
“Barbarians!” The holy man told them. “The king shall hear of this! And if he doesn’t do something, I swear I shall!” The king, upon hearing of the torture, banned such punishments throughout the town.
But the man did not forgive so easily… The priest’s magic seemed to have drifted into an odd sort…
Legend tells the pieces pulled themselves back together; the man reformed. He silently cursed the town, promising to destroy its future by kidnapping the children of the town. He made his home in an abandoned house near the edge of town, dooming all who should try to live there…
-
“No way, that’s ridiculous!” John shouted, the other children fixated on the woman who had been telling the tale.
“I’m telling you it’s the truth.” The nanny nodded. “And so, you children should get going to bed so we adults can keep you safe.”
Lisa tilted her head to the side. “But how can he stay alive without a face?”
“Weren’t you listening?” Cameron interrupted. “He’s like an undead, he doesn’t need to breath or nothin’.”
The woman shook her head, shooing the six off to bed with laughter. “Now you all get to sleep.” She ordered, blowing out the candle.
Throughout the night, the nanny remained awake; sure that the children would attempt to wake up during the night. So she opted to read a book in front of the warm fireplace.
A slamming pulled her from the story, like the door opening. “They’re all asleep.” She said, turning and expecting to find the children’s parents. Rather, she saw the front door hanging open wide with no one in sight. Standing the woman made her way over and shut the door with a look up the stairs.
Nothing… “I didn’t think it was that win-“ She began, turning to return to her chair. She was cut off mid turn as she stared in horror at the figure staring back at her. If she was still there a moment later, the nanny would have screamed.
“What was that?” One of the children asked, hearing the door slam. “Maybe mom and dad are back?” Another suggested. The six slowly made their way to the stairs, hoping to see their parents. Instead, the downstairs was silent. A fog covered the floor, slowly drifting up the stairs.
John made his way down, curious. He was overtaken by the fog, coughing for a moment, and then going silent. The other children stared, afraid. A figure slowly appeared in the fog that had completely overtaken the main room. It was tall with elongated limbs. A lengthy leg stepped onto the stairs, the humanoid beginning to make its way up.
Lisa gulped as she tried to see its face. Slowly but surely, she realized it was not obscured at all. The man had no face at all… The kids screamed as one by one they realized with horror.
-
“We’re home!” The mother called, stepping into the home. Everything seemed rather tidy, she thought as she searched for the nanny. The father ascended the stairs, looking in the room. “What is it?” The woman asked, watching him pause. “Is it the kids? What’s wrong?” She asked, running up the stairs.
Both their eyes locked on the window, absolute horror overtaking their face…
The house has had other owners… but none stay for long…
