Wowhead in top 1,000 websites after less then 2 years?! Wow!

I've been a web developer for some time now, and I've always looked at Wowhead as one of the best designed sites I know. However, I was reading the about page and I came accross this...
The database is the result of 6 months of hard work, and was released in June 2006
You released the database in 2006, and less then two years later you are in the top 1,000 websites in the world? Even if you only know the basics about how search engine indexing and traffic works, you'll realize that Wowhead is nothing less then a miracle.
My question is this: how on Earth did you get so much traffic and get such a high Pagerank in so little time? The people listed on the
About Us
page must be some kind of geniuses.

How? Simple: few ads + Google like first page + ajax-features on many pages + css = makes miracles.
If you look on all other WoW database related sites they are usually coded in a slow-loading way, filled with ads and popups, a lot of crap. Wowhead is simply better and displaying the site, facts and letting you browse without having long loading times. Also it's structured and you don't have 10 diferent versions of a mob (like thottbot) or ads making you wait 30-1 minute each search (allakhazam).

It was out before then, but don't remind Skosiris ;P.
Anyway, I would simply attribute this to the quality of the site and number of users available. When there are 8+ million accounts in the world, there must be some percentage visiting a site dedicated to those same 8 million.

Very, very true. I was working on a business model with a few friends for doing a nice, streamlined, efficient WoW database done with ajax and then Wowhead released their own. (previously Wowhead just had -the- best talent calculator hands down, and that was all)
We were like 'Uh... um.. nice site. Well there goes that idea.' It was easy to see back then that Wowhead would be very hard to compete with, so we canned the project. Looking back, imo it was a smart idea.

I run my own World of Wacraft site which is a part of a moderately large network. Apart from some regular members that were already on the network (about 30), I have had NO new registrations and a total of two clicks from Google. I don't know what I'm doing wrong; my sites been up for many months now, I've added a Google sitemap, I've optimised my site for search engines, added keywords, etc. but I seem to be getting absolutely no traffic :/

Watched a 1 hour "documentary" about Ajax and similar engines, also combined with css. Quite the inspiration, you can only imagine. :P

Do you have interesting and unique content? What's on your site?
Link? (I would hope Wowhead wouldn't mind you mentioning it here since two people have asked for it rather than you spamming it.)

Here it is.
You'll see that our guides aren't great, but we do have a complete map database. I guess that's the problem, really, we don't offer anything new.

Link? I'd love to watch it.

There is a map database on
Wowhead
aswell. If you want to attract users, you need something that is new/better/more attractive than the rest, or that has the potential for an userbase.
Ask yourself: (Why) would someone go to a website for (feature blah)?

I agree, however the main issue I think I am having is that my site isn't getting enough exposure. I know my site isn't unique, but even if it was a revolutionary, completely unique and excellent site it would be no good if it's on the 14th page of Google. I'm not having a problem where users aren't staying, I'm just having the problem of barely getting any visitors at all. When Wowhead first came out, how long did it take you to get a reasonably high Google rank and how did you achieve it? If you didn't get much traffic from Google, where did you get it from?

I remember coming across wowhead when it was still relatively unknown in the community. The first time I heard someone else mention it was for a chance to win a beta invite for Burning Crusades. I have to say that bit of marketing genius did help bring alot of traffic and life to the site.
