In fact, the girl earned a danged expensive cruise to Hawaii, which I'm still figuring out how to pay for.
How on earth did you manage to get into that situation?

Something about a bet on straight A's I think. He posted about it in RB. Awesome parentage imo.

Yeah. She had some Ds and even Fs at the beginning of this last school session. I told her that if she got straight As, she would get a cruise to Hawaii, trying to give her a big incentive. But, I didn't think she would do it. She had to get As on everything, and do every assignment, and every extra credit assignment. She worked her butt off. She definitely deserves it.

Good stuff. Congrats to her, and good luck sorting it all out.

#9: Who make better companions - cats or dogs? Why?
I know this seems a little silly, but I thought it'd be fun to throw in a more light hearted debate for today. I hope we can all still have some fun with it.
I'm looking forward to seeing different peoples reasonings as to which they prefer.
I wanted to get this updated at the same time as I usually do, but as I'm busy in game, I will post my opinion in a bit.

Depends on yourself in all honesty: If you are outgoing and active, a dog is the better choice. If you prefer the quiet and want an animal that will look after themselves, then the cat is the pet for you.

I have both, and it really depends on the cat, and it depends on the dog. There are some dogs that are horrible companions, and there are some cats that are awful as well. Some dogs are really really awesome, and some cats are really really cool. I have a cat that sleeps on my feet when it gets cold. That's all she does. I give her like 5 bucks in food a month, and she keeps my feet warm. That's a pretty cool deal. She causes no trouble. I have this other cat that attacks everything near him. He lives outside and is hellish, but he hunts mice. That's pretty awesome, considering we live on a farm and mice are horrible. I have a pit bull who is really sweet, but she has gotten into a horrible habit of barking sometimes, especailly when I'm trying to nap. Everytime she does that, it makes me mad. But, she isn't nearly as bad as this dog we fostered for a month. She chewed everything, shat everywhere, and would barrel into people and knock them over, even our toddler. That dog was good for nothing.
So, you can't really say one is better than the other, as a category. It depends on my mood, and depends on the individual animal.

For me, I'd say dogs. I have a cat, and I love him very much but he is much more individualistic than my dogs. He prefers to roam whilst my dogs, four in total, prefer to play with us, sit in our lap on the couch, cuddle with us etc.. As far as a companion pet, these are the types of things that stick out to me.

It depends on the individual animal. But generally i prefer cats, my cat is great, it's cheap to feed, spends most of it's time outside in the summer, in the winter it will stay around me, but isn't wanting anything from me at the same time, it will never really meow at me either, if it wants to go outside it will usually just stare at me till i notice it, very much like puss in boots from shrek.
How is this a debate? Since this is purely on personal preference there is nothing that can really be debated.

I lol'd. Very cute.

You don't think things like this can be debated? I very much agree it isn't near the caliber of previous topics but does it hurt to have a fun/silly one once in awile? And I very much feel there are people who could debate this if they so chose regarding feline vs canine tendancies.
TRAINING AND HOUSEBREAKING - Easier with a cat.
PERSONALITY- Cats to me have a much more pronounced personality.
INTELLIGENCE - Unlike the personality argument, this one is much easier to measure in scientific terms. Sorry dog lovers, cats are measurably more intelligent.
CLEANLINESS - Well, here's an easy one. Cats are definitely cleaner than dogs, almost to a point of compulsiveness. Dogs are wonderful creatures but damn they're dirty.
SERVICE - Dogs are natural born protectors, guards if you will. Your dog will instinctively protect you and your house 'til the day they die and are happy to do so. Cats are only looking out for themselves, except in rare cases- very rare cases. A cat will only help you if it benefits them in some way but that's not to say that they wouldn't if they knew how, it just isn't in their instinctual behavior.
Can you now see and or agree that a healthy debate can be had regardless of a personal preference over dog or cat?

I kind of don't see this as a debate. I mean, the US Supreme Court just let down a major piece of legislation having to do with Arizona's Immigration Enforcement law. That is a potential gold mine of debate. Cats and dogs? No.

Obviously there are more serious debates to be had and I fully intend on utilizing them. I fully and sincerely apologize that thinking one out of the nine debates so far could be of a lesser, more light hearted caliber. I will not make this mistake again.

I agree, while I don't intend to normally take suggestions/votes in the thread as has already been discussed, I think it's fair to see if this debate can pan out as MyTie believes it will.
So Debate #10 is set. But until then, can we not nitpick the credibility of the current topic.

I'm fine with having debates about politics, but it's gonna be almost impossible for anyone outside the states to debate on that topic, unless it is on the morals of what is being done. that said, it's your thread so you can choose the debates as you like.
On Topic: how do you define the intelligence of an animal, you can't rate it on the same scale as humans (obviously). so how is it rated, ability to perform tasks the animal was meant for (catching mice/herding)? or the ability to be trained.

INTELLIGENCE - Unlike the personality argument, this one is much easier to measure in scientific terms. Sorry dog lovers, cats are measurably more intelligent. That really depends on the breed for both animals; sheep dogs are some of the most intelligent domesticated canines out there after all. And not all cats are more intelligent: We've had half a dozen in our house over the last 15 years, and of them, only two have ever figured out that they can push and pull open our screen front door to let themselves out; all of the others have just sat waiting for us to let them out.
So, just like there are super genius and mouth breathers for humans, the same thing happens with cats and dogs.
Also, I wouldn't count dogs as being 'stupid' no matter what the media shows lol; they are just happy go lucky in the moment type animals while cats can do a 'long' planning.

Depends on the cat, depends on the dog, depends on the owner. I prefer cats. My cat is the best pet I have ever had and I love him with my whole heart.

Generally speaking an animal can do what it was meant for quite easily. It's in their nature.
The ability to be trained on the other hand is widespread. My oldest dog sits with no verbal command just by me putting my thumb/pointer finger pressed together above him. He learned this at 7 weeks old after being shown one time/given a treat. He asks to go out; we don't have a screen door or a dog door, so that isn't an option for him. If we choose, which is rare, to give him any type of human food he will, by nature as he was never trained to do such, take it so gently from you that if you didn't see it, you wouldn't believe a dog just took it. He will not get on the bed unless I say it's okay. I honestly don't know the deal with that. My partner can call him up all day long but if I'm here he will sit at the foot of the bed, looking at me for permission; not caring that he already got it from her. He guards our daughter as if it is his only duty on Earth. He barks like theres a murderer outside if someone comes in our gate. If he is outside the gate he stays within 3 feet of the fence; it doesn't matter if we are with him and toss a ball/frisbee, unless we go to wherever it lands, he will not fetch it if it's past 3 feet.
Our other dogs on the other hand are well mannered with us and our child but not trained so well. They don't always come when called, they like to dig under the fence trying to get out. And heaven have mercy if a cop or fire truck or ambulance goes by. They will be barking for 20 minutes. All of this when we work with them daily. I am sure it has to do with the breed but regardless as I said, I think the ability to be trained is a huge thing. My younger three dogs are stupidly cute and great with the family but they fall a few french fries short of the happy meal if ya know what I mean...
As far as my cat, he's his own soul. I once read that you don't own a cat, a cat owns you and I concur. He comes/goes as he sees fit. Which basically means he comes at dinner time and otherwise gallivants around the neighborhood. In my experience, there is no 'training' a cat; they train you.

Does that make him intelligent or stupid?
In my opinion it makes him intelligent for being able to work the windows and normal for going after the birds. I don't see how you can call it stupid when in the dogs mind, it's 100% normal to chase birds.
