That's silly. We have religious education in the UK and it's mandatory up to the age of 16. Religious education is supremely useful, as long as it can be separated from religious instruction.
Not religious studies, more pastoral education. As in, Catholics go off to be looked after by a Catholic priest, non-denominational Christians go off to a non-denominational Christian pastor, Jews go off to be looked after by a rabbi, etc..
No, no, and a thousand times no. Religious education involves learning about religions, in a non judgemental fact based way, which can be done in a variety of ways, and should be mandatory. Your pastoral education amounts to religious instruction, which, although I think there's no reason that it shouldn't occur on school premises, should remain outside of school hours.
It's legislated, sadly. Which is why I say - I would like to see the ethics classes reintroduced for those who are currently just sitting around twiddling their thumbs during this mandated period each week.

Civics?
Yup.
Really?
Yup.
Ethics maybe
Why?
...though I agree with Squish ultimately
You contradicted yourself; he said he wanted ethics back into schools - you said "ethics maybe" meaning schools could w/o that. So you can see the state of confusion I'm in.
... but civics?
Yes
ma'am
. -----Corrected for you :)-----
How shouldn't that be in schools?
By not teaching it in schools.
No need to be annoying with quote boxes. I did not contradict myself. I said maybe ethics shouldn't be in school as in, maybe
boundary-wise
, it's a step too far. Then I said "Though I agree with Squish ultimately," since personally I think ethics SHOULD be taught in school. Me thinking it should personally be in schools can still leave it open to maybe crossing a boundary for others. Wow, you REALLY know how to pick something simple apart.
Secondly, if you're going to be part of a debate, actually debate. I asked you how it shouldn't be in schools and got "By not teaching it in schools." I think it was pretty evident my question was asking how civics in a school setting is bad. And before you say "Because it's bad or unneeded," tell me why, give me legitmate reasons.
Personally I don't see how teaching civics in school is not something that should be done. All civics is, ultimately, is the teachings of the government setup. I mean ask a group of 100 US high school students who the Speaker of the House is and
most
couldn't tell you it is John A. Boehner. Ask them who Secretary of State is and
most
couldn't tell you it is Hillary Clinton. Ask them who Vice-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is and
I bet 1 in maybe 500 high school students would know it was
Admiral James A. Winnefeld, Jr. And those numbers are probably pushing it. These students will be voting in 1-4 years depending on grade and I think it is an EXCELLENT idea that they know who is what and what each position does. I don't want someone who knows NOTHING of civics voting. Thats a nasty spell for disaster.
civ·ics
noun ( used with a singular verb )
the study or science of the privileges and obligations of citizens.
2. ( US ), ( Canadian ) the study of government and its workings

You don't understand, people are single-minded. I once knew a girl who voted for George Bush because "he was cute" She thought nothing of his ideals, nothing of his principals, just because he "was cute". I realized something then, I realized that people like her represent the majority of the public...
And that a person (like you in this case) who researches things and votes based on one's knowledge and background
will
do the research - regardless of the civics taught in their schools, they will learn. Others will vote for whichever candidate sells it the best.
So no, I think that schools should focus more on subjects such as Science, Math, and History, and let individuals make their own opinions rather than feed them governmental propaganda of "what their place is in society".

What law effectively prevents that?
Personally, I think that if (b) isn't feasible without legal protection and/or you need to resort to (a), then I would definitely want to do (c) instead, because it sounds like a pretty crappy place to be in.
You're essentially arguing for a highly advanced form of Capitalism. Which is something that's been
forced on third world countries
and would have never developed without state intervention and protectionism on the behalf of markets in developed worlds.
Here's what happens
when the power dynamic is rectified in favour of property.

#24: Is the 2012 myth even possible?
December 21st marks the countdown to what ancient prophecies term "the end of time", which many interpret to mean the end of the world - or at least, the end of the world as we know it. While there is much speculation and predictions regarding the events that will actually transpire, the impending end of the Mayan Calendar is building a momentum among the masses similar to the dreaded anticipation that we witnessed as the world approached the milestone year 2000 (remember Y2K?).
The current economic chaos and global meltdown may be precursors to the transition leading up to December 21, 2012, the day that the 5,125 year-old Mayan calendar suddenly comes to an end, resetting to 0.0.0.0. But what will be the catalyst? Some believe we will experience a polar shift, as has happened on Earth before. Others predict the impact of a great meteor or asteroid, which has also catastrophically occurred before. Or could it be the result of increasing global warming, or the reduction of the earth's magnetic field (which has already begun), or the extinction of too many species, or could it be global Armageddon brought on by man's incessant greed triggering war and destruction?
What do you think? Will you be bunkering down? Or in the streets laughing at the people freaking out?

I'll be in the streets laughing at people freaking out. If there was going to be a meteor impact, astronomers would have known about it for a few years. As for those other things, they are disasters that happen over hundreds or thousands of years, not 5 months.
It is entirely possible that a catastrophe could coincidentally happen on that day - eathquake, tsunami, nuclear meltdown etc. It is
far
more likely, however, that there will simply be a bunch of nutters out trying to
cause
a catastrophe to prove their point and increase their sense of self-worth.

It won't happen. Not to jinx it. But it won't happen. The Mayans ran out of paper - nothing to die over.
And how dissapointing would that be if the world apocalypse happened this year? There is so much more humanity has to accomplish!

I heard something about how their calender had less days in a month or something, placing Dec. 12, 2012 a couple years ago.

The closest I've heard to something like that is the Mayan calendar not accounting for leap year so the 2012 event should have happened already earlier this year. But again, who knows. I don't think anything crazy is gonna happen on 12-21.

Yup, I believe that is what I heard. And I can see that as a possibility for their calender to end early.

Is it possible the world will end in 2012? Ok, yeah. Is it possible the Mayans predicted this? Uhm... I don't see how, but yeah. Do I buy any of it? No. Not at all.
I remember seeing a book about how to survive after Y2K at a book sale in Washington in 2003.

#24: Is the 2012 myth even possible?
I suppose anything is possible, but the odds of this one coming true I would have to say are infinitely higher then the odds of winning the lottery.
And if by chance it is the beginning of the end I doubt the event would be cataclysmic in nature, my guess it would be something seemingly insignificant that would start a chain of events that would eventually lead up to our demise.
