DOTD - Debate of The Day #52

The Mayan Calendar ends on that particular date, okay, but it does not mean the world will end. I, personally, think that's an enormous amount of bull#$%^. As far as I know, the Mayans predicted nothing about the world ending, the only "evidence" people who actually believe in 21/12 have is that the calendar ends on that day. News flash, the calendar hanging in my living room ends on the 31st of December - oh dear, the world is ending on New Years!

About the Maya stuff, is this not just a "wouldn't-it-be-crazy-if" media creation? Does any non-trivial number of people seriously believe something is going to happen on whatever 2012 date? I mean not to the point of arguing that it might happen, but to the point of selling their stocks and stockpiling canned goods?
I know some religious nuts who genuinely believe we are nearing the end.

#24: Is the 2012 myth even possible?
Possible sure; likely, not very.
And as the others have said, the Mayans didn't have any 'great prophecy' that the world ends, that was just as far as the stone calendar went; it was other cultures finding it and being prone to end of the world hysteria that brought it about.
Now the arrival of the Spaniards, which is the true end of the Mayan world, they had prophecy's for that....

Is it possible the world will end in 2012? Ok, yeah. Is it possible the Mayans predicted this? Uhm... I don't see how, but yeah. Do I buy any of it? No. Not at all.
I remember seeing a book about how to survive after Y2K at a book sale in Washington in 2003.
This.
Like the Higgs thing, people don't understand something, make assumptions and it becomes a
thing
.
Peoples' belief in something, no matter how many people believe it, has no bearing on the truth, validity or value of the belief. This is always the case but it's even more ridiculous when the belief stems from a fundamental lack of understanding of the subject.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

I don't think the world will end any time soon, but here are a few
doomsday scenarios

Yeah, separate to the Mayan thing, Harold Camping is always good for some giggles.

That's the guy who predicted the worlds end three times, right?

I'm religious. I believe in the Bible. The Bible is apocalyptic. I don't pretend to understand the will of God for the physical Earth in the immediate future.

#25: Michael Jacksons Death: Conspiracy or Horrible Accident?
Post by
Atik
Accident.
Any celeberty who dies ends up being linked to hundreds of theories.
I don't beleive any of them...

Neither. Drugee + enabler. Neither conspiracy nor horrible accident. It wasn't a conspiracy because it doesn't fit that description. It wasn't a horrible accident because it was too busy being an irresponsible mistake. An accident is when someone makes a left turn without seeing a car coming and gets in a wreck. An accident is when an airplane crashes because a component failed. An irresponsible mistake is when a doctor shoots up a rich drugee with sedatives until the dude dies. That isn't an accident. That isn't a "whoops", I didn't mean to do that. The effect was a death, which was unintentional, but the cause, the insertion of drugs was intentional, which means it wasn't an accident. Both the cause and effect must be accidental for it to qualify as an accident in my mind.

I think being friends with Deepak Chopra contributed to his rejection of medicine, if I recall the circumstances correctly.
As for the end times:
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

I agree with MyTie in this regrad; Jackson was screwing up his body for a long long time, it's no surprise that finally caught up to him.

#26: An AIDS Vaccine Finally Within Reach?
Anyone seen
this
?
What do you think? Will a vaccine for AIDS ever exist? Or does this just get hopes up for nothing?
Post by
Levarus
All I know is that whomever makes the AID virus will be very, very rich.
